Sheep Guarding Llama

Our Florida vacation is over. Hard to believe that we even got to go and now it is all over. We are totally ready to leave Florida though – we have had plenty of this weather and the theme park environment and the crappy hotel. We are going to miss all of the amazing food but it isn’t enough to make us want to stay. And, more than anything else, we really miss Orea and Mr. Humphries.

For those of you who have been listening to the SGL Podcast and were interested in learning more about the citrus fruits in the Orange family – you can learn more about them at Bouguet of Fruits. Here you can learn about the three types of oranges which include: sweet, sour and madarin aka tangerine. Very interesting stuff. Keeping SGL educational. Even more interesting is what you find when you start looking into the larger fruit families. The Prunus (plum) genus includes many of our popular fruits like cherries, peaches, apricots, plums and nectarines. But even weirder is when you realize that the rose family contains most of the fruit that we eat! How weird and interesting is that?

We had to be up early, early, early this morning. 4:30 am wake up call. That was not fun. We were up until after midnight last night so that we could get the final podcast out as well as getting ourselves checked in for our flight. We didn’t want to save anything for the last minute and by getting those items completed we were also able to pack up the laptop and all of the electronic paraphenalia so that none of that had to be an issue this morning. I definitely appreciated that although I might have appreciated the sleep more.

We were packed and ready and out the door in plenty of time but discovered that our limo (read: Towncar – I have no idea why it is called a limo) had not arrived. The limo company only allotted two hours from our pickup time to our flight time and we were not very comfortable with that before and now that the limo was not there on time we were even less comfortable with it. We called the limo company about four times and didn’t manage to get a hold of anyone there. The hotel desk clerk came outside and talked to us and said that it was really common for taxi and limo companies to scam people down here which was extra likely because we had paid for our shuttle ahead of time. So we gave them until 6:05 am (we had planned on them being at the hotel ten or even fifteen minutes before they were scheduled to be there) before we called a Checker Cab. The taxi arrived in about two minutes. We didn’t know whether or not we would be able to find a cab so early in the morning with such little notice but he was right there and zipped us right over to the airport. Eventually the limo company did get back to us and apologized and said that their driver had gotten lost and was not able to find our hotel. Of course, the driver didn’t call us to ask where it was either. Had anyone gotten on the phone and talked to us we would have been fine waiting another ten minutes. But we didn’t dare wait to call a cab because we couldn’t get anyone at the limo company on the phone and for all that we knew we had been scammed or, more likely, just forgotten about. Or our driver was totally lost and would never find us. The limo company claims that they are not charging us for the service this week. If that really happens then we will be that much better off. Altogher that will save us almost $70! So, although that mix-up was stressful and unfortunate, we don’t have any extra money right now and that will really help.

We arrived at the airport at 6:30 or so and were able to get right into the terminal and enjoy a relaxed McDonald’s breakfast. We were ready to just relax for a few minutes after worrying for the last forty minutes that we were not going to be able to catch our flight. But now we were fine and no longer had to worry about getting to our plane. Pheww. We don’t have to switch planes so once we were on we knew that there really weren’t any more worries about getting back home.

Our flight on AirTran was on time, a little ahead actually, and went very smoothly. We scored one of the new planes that has complimentary XM Satellite Radio service. That is really cool that they do that. It is a marketing tool for XM but AirTran sure doesn’t have to give it away for free so that is a really nice service. To be even nicer they also give away free headphones just in case you haven’t brought any with you. Both Min and I had our headphones with us but we thought that that was really cool. Once again I am really impressed by AirTran. Independance Air declared bankrupcy this morning and as much as I am sad that that had to happen I am happy because AirTran is doing such a good job that I really don’t like seeing them having any extra competitors.

We arrived in Rochester about a quarter till noon without incident. Boy are we happy to be back in New York. We even miss the nice brisk weather. Dad was waiting for us in the airport by the baggage claim which made getting our luggage even easier. The only bad thing that happened on our flight was that my main piece of luggage on its maiden voyage was crushed in flight and is now deformed. We aren’t able to assess the amount of the damage yet but hope that we will be able to repair it. It is so tough to have luggage actually survive a single flight these days. I almost feel like I should just fly with everything in a ziplock bag so that I can just throw it out when I am done with it.

Oreo was waiting in the car for us in the parking lot and was very happy to see his parents although I am pretty sure that we were a bit more happy to see him. He had gotten sick while dad was in the airport waiting for us. We think that he might have remembered that the airport was where we left him last week. Or he might just have been nervous. He is so sensitive.

Dad took us home so that we could drop off our stuff and then we hoped over to the Omega Grill to have some lunch. Dad had been over there all ready this morning and they had two of our pictures from our Flickr page posted up on their milk refridgerator right out front. You know you eat at a place a lot when they put your vacation pictures up where everyone can see them. It is the pictures of Min with one of the chipmunks (either Chip or Dale but we never know which is which) and the picture of me with Pluto.

He was out there fishing with his brother-in-law and he caught this delicious bass and sent me this picture so, of course, I was unable to resist posting it up here on SGL. Doesn’t Eric look a little too much like our current president in this picture?

After lunch Dominica and I just went home and pretty much crashed. We had some new DVDs that were delivered by Amazon while we were gone and we had some new British television to watch so we took Oreo down to the basement and we watched the first disc of Grace and Favour which is often referred to here as Are You Being Served? Again. Dominica has to work tonight and is very tired so she took a nap from about 6:00 until 10:15. I spent the afternoon working on the computer getting caught up with all of the stuff that I have fallen behind on. Boy is it nice to have rock solid Internet access and a desktop machine again.

I have a lot of stuff to do this week but not as much as I had feared that I would coming back from a week away. I am scheduled to be in Buffalo all day on Thursday for the big Microsoft event where they are giving away all kinds of awesome, expensive software. Unfortunately the event is all ready sold out and a bunch of people didn’t register in advance and aren’t able to go to the show now.

Sometime either today or tomorrow SGL should reach 600,000 words. The Old Testament of the King James Bible is just 602,585 words. Only one or two days until we pass that point. That is a pretty major milestone.

Dominica went into work at 11:00 this evening and discovered that she had been taken off of the schedule at work. Just before we went on vacation she had put in three weeks notice – she didn’t want to give two weeks notice when we were all ready scheduled for a vacation week so she gave them an extra week to help them deal with it. And she wasn’t even definitive about leaving the hotel at that point. She only put in notice that she couldn’t be regularly scheduled anymore after that point but she could definitely be on call and could help out with training and might be able to do part shifts to help get new auditor(s) up to speed. We really fealt that we had put a lot of work into making sure that the hotel wasn’t getting screwed over at all and in fact fealt that the hotel was really getting a much better deal since they were really overstaffed and couldn’t handle all of the people that they have there now. The worst thing was that there was no message left in any form for her. No telephone call or voice mail while we were away. No note at work. Nothing. Just taken off of the schedule without any notice. Now that works out really well for us because Dominica starts her new job on Wednesday and has paperwork stuff that she has to do tomorrow to get ready for it and she has class tomorrow as well so having any hotel work was going to just make things a lot more difficult. So we are happy that she doesn’t have any more shifts there to deal with. Especially since those shifts would not be at the same time as her shifts with Fujifilm. Swing shifts are the worst. She really needs to be well rested and relaxed so that she is able to get up to speed on her new job as quickly as possible. It is her career switching job so it will be a lot different from anything else that she has ever done. Not a good time to be working two jobs. So the Lord is definitely watching over us. We just wish that her manager would have talked to her first about this instead of just taking her off of the schedule without any notice.

Dominica managed to wake up her manager at home and was able to talk to her. Apparently she just didn’t bother to communicate at all and hadn’t taken her off of the schedule to be malicious but another employee had come back to work and needed hours and it seemed like the best way to take care of everything. And that is true. If only there had been a note or, better yet, a telephone call sometime in the last ten days – preferrably right after the decision to go that way was made. It would be nice if we were able to make plans from time to time and not live by the seat of our pants at every possible moment. Why can’t anything ever be easy?

Speaking of problems: I got another screwed up notice from Associated Healthcare. I really am getting a feeling that we are going to have to go to court over this one. They never bothered to call me back after I had spoken to them a few weeks ago and now they send me a late payment notice for an amount of money that is yet a new, made-up amount. Never once have they sent me a statement with all of the line items on it nor have they ever sent me a “final” payment statement. And, to bend things in my favour, I just recently found the original paperwork for the contract that states that everything should have been paid off by the insurance company by May. So I don’t plan on paying them a penny now. I was going to give them a few hundred and write it off as a big health insurance mistake but now I know that the entire thing is a scam and I am going to make them really sweat. It is unfortunate that companies like that are able to do so many unethical and illegal things so easily to hurt me but I figure that if I don’t stand up to them then fifty other people will get steamrolled by them. That seems to be their business plan. They get your information and then charge you for things that you never agreed to but the paperwork is very ambiguous so you never know exactly what is going on. They wait half a year before sending a bill and send tons of overlapping and unconnected bills and never return calls so that you can never figure out what is going on and never get to speak with anyone. Then they tell you that you should have dealt with it right away and since you didn’t they try to scare you into paying their made-up fees. This is probably just a fallback strategy for times when overcharging the insurance company doesn’t work out like in my case. At least I got on before it went too far. But it has gone pretty far all ready. If I am smart, and I seldom am, I will get a lawyer involved tomorrow instead of waiting for them to tell me one thing and then bill be for another. They keep stalling trying to get me stuck. It is really obvious that they think that there is some benefit to stalling and I need to make sure that they are not able to do that any longer. What a pain. But what do you expect from a company that is willing to have its regional offices in Warsaw and Mount Morris?

Dad is coming over at 9:00 in the morning to pick me up so that we can go and get breakfast. Dominica started getting another migraine at work tonight so Oreo and I had to run some Excedrin over to her. Oreo was really nervous about leaving the house and wouldn’t let me drive without climbing onto my lap. He is really scared still and isn’t sure that we are back for good. He doesn’t take change well.

Our final day in Walt Disney World is now officially over. We are back in the hotel and getting everything ready to go first thing in the morning. Our taxi (limo) is picking us up at 6:00 am and taking us right over to the airport in Orlando and we are expected to be home by noonish. Dad and Oreo are picking us up from the airport. We are very much looking forward to being home. We really miss our little dog. This vacation would have been a lot more fun if Oreo had been able to come along with us. Today is another day without Internet access as well as no Audioblogger service. We have been exceptionally out of touch while we have been down here. We had been counting on at least some form of communications working. I guess that technology just isn’t being used in logical ways yet that allow us to move forward into the next generation of services. Ho hum.

We had originally been planning on jumping out of bed early this morning and making the most of our final day in Disney World but we were pretty tired after last night and decided that we wanted to get a little bit more sleep than that. So we ended up getting up just after 9:00 and catching the 10:10 shuttle. We took the shuttle to Downtown Disney instead of EPCOT today. The shuttle drivers know us pretty well by now and do us favours when they can. We tip well too so they really like us. And we are pretty flexible when they forget to pick us up or have to have us wait for another shuttle to come. Dominica wanted to go Downtown so that she could do some shopping that she hadn’t been able to do previously. The shopping is much better on the outside of the parks anyway. I have never figured out why anyone would shop inside of the park when there is so much better shopping on the outside. The shops our larger, nicer, cleaner and have better selections. The prices are the same. But you don’t have to spend your expensive park time when shopping Downtown. We walked over to West Side and bought caramel, chocolate, peanut butter covered apples that were yummy but way too big. We ate what we could and then tried to catch a bus to go visit Port Orleans since everyone we know seems to stay there. Our afternoon plans included tea at the Grand Floridian and since the Disney transportation system is very good and going directly anywhere going there via Port Orleans was a pretty reasonable route to take. We had hours to kill but didn’t have the energy to go back into the parks again. Even though we had a pass. We are to the point where neither of us is enjoying being in the parks very much.

Now the disaster starts. The buses were mislabeled. By mislabeled we get stuck talking about how they do the buses. At any given location they have a number of bus stops, say about fifteen. Each stop has a sign that lists where the bus that stops there goes to. For example, the bus we took on the first night went to five resorts. Only one of those resorts can be shown on the electric sign on the side of the bus. Every stop has a situation like this. We have used this system for a whole week now and are pretty comfortable with it. At Downtown Disney, bus number one is labeled that it goes to Old Key West and Port Orleans. Of course, the electric sign on the bus only lists Old Key West but it really goes to five locations inside of Old Key West as well as Typhoon Lagoon which you would never have guessed. But where it doesn’t go is Port Orleans. It turns out that there is a separate bus that goes there but nothing anywhere that informs you of this. After we were on the first bus for forty-five minutes or so we were finally told this once they realized that we were on the wrong bus. This bus driver told us that each bus only goes to where the electric sign says and not the written sign. But we knew that this was backwards from the way that all of the other buses that we had used so far worked. So either this bus was mislabeled or ten or so other buses were mislabeled. Either way, Disney was not labeling all of their buses correctly and this time they really caught us off guard.

We got to one stop where the bus right behind us had been assigned to be the Port Orleans bus and the driver dropped us off so that we could switch right over. She did some calling to let us know how we could do it really quickly. By this point we had managed to kill all of the extra time that we had. Our tea reservation is at 2:20 and we had gotten onto the first bus at noon. We would have been on the bus earlier but they didn’t label the bus stop at Disney West Side and we spent ten minutes just trying to find the bus stop there. We were not the only people who couldn’t find the bus stop either. We ended up asking some people who had been lost for a while and had finally gotten directions.

The bus to Port Orleans was another bus that took a very long time to do its route. It had four or five stops inside of Port Orleans which takes forever as well as going first to Typhoon Lagoon which, of course, is not shown on the electric sign. So we were on this bus for a very long time. When we finally got to a place in Port Orleans where we felt that we could change buses we got off and waited for the Magic Kingdom bus since there is no direct route from Port Orleans to the Grand Floridian. The original plan had been to bop on over to Port Orleans and spend fifteen minutes or so there looking around and then to go to the Magic Kingdom and kill an hour or two shopping there and then go to the Grand Floridian since the trip from the Magic Kingdom to the Grand Floridian is really fast and simple. But not we were stuck going to the Magic Kingdom just so that we could make all of our connections to be able to get there at all. The Magic Kingdom bus that we got on did the entire Port Orleans route that we had just done backwards. So it took incredibly longer than we had been anticipating (for the third bus in a row.) We finally got to the Magic Kingdom and ran as quickly as we could to catch the Resort Monorail which would take us to the Grand Floridian. Or course, the Grand Floridian was the farthest point on that route as well so that took a lot more time that we would have liked. But the weather was really hot today. The hottest day yet this week and we couldn’t handle jogging outside to try to beat the monorail around so we were stuck riding. It probably would have taken us longer to walk anyway as we are pretty gimpy from all of the blisters at this point.

We walked up to the desk at the Tea Room at the Grand Floridian Resort at exactly 2:20. Two and a half hours after we had left Downtown Disney using Disney’s own transportation the entire way. One hundred and fifty minutes of bus and monorail riding. Thas was pretty much our entire day. The desk at the Floridian felt bad and made sure that we had a really good seat for our tea with a good view of the Seven Seas Lagoon.

We were at tea for two whole hours and it was amazing. Definitely one of the best experiences while we have been here at Disney World. We both went with the Buckingham Tea which included finger sandwiches, scones and pastries along with our tea. After tip and tax our tea was close to $60 but it was well worth it. We had so much fun and the tea and food was so good. The service was amazing. The Grand Floridian definitely deserves its reputation. There was a live band playing in the lobby the entire time that we were there. Our host was a dead ringer for Omar Sharif and very good. Our waiter was definitely the best that we had seen in all of Disney and it was obvious that he took he job very seriously and was a true professional – not that any of the other fine waitstaff in Disney has been less than professional but this guy really stood out. It was so nice and relaxing to just have tea there. We both highly recommend doing it some or maybe every afternoon in Disney. We ended up talking to the table next to us for a while. They were from central Wyoming and this was their first time having tea there as well and were really enjoying themselves. We just had so much fun there. It is one of the few things that we are really going to miss when we are back in New York.

After tea we went back to EPCOT where we were going to catch our shuttle back to the hotel. We had about one hour before we had to catch the shuttle so we headed into EPCOT for our final chance to see the parks. We ran quickly up to Morocco and got ourselves some more hummus that we had liked so much yesterday. It was very delicious again. Then we ran down to the UK and grabbed some more fish and chips. We were totally out of time and had to almost run all of the way out of EPCOT and out to catch the shuttle. We made it just barely in time. We caught the shuttle and came back to the hotel. We were really glad to be back. We are totally exhausted and are really glad to be done with the park. We can’t wait to be home tomorrow. We miss our little dog SO much.

There was some good television shows on tonight and after Dominica packed the room up we decided to watch some to wind down. There was some episodes of the Simpsons, King of the Hill and Family Guy. It is nice to see television from time to time.

I talked to the hotel about how much time we had put into getting Internet access to work. They decided, after I bugged them about it since they weren’t going to take the initiative to do anything about it any other way, to give us a free nights for the effort that we have put into getting Internet access to work. Tonight the general manager told the front desk girl that they didn’t have an Internet Provider and all of the people who work during the day were just lying trying to get us to stop bothering them. One free night is almost a 15% discount so we are pretty happy with that. That is one free meal in Disney. I hate to have to ask for a discount but we have really been treated poorly here. We are definitely never coming back to this hotel.

The Internet access situation is the worst today that it has been any day yet. There is absolutely no access at all today. At least we got confirmation from the front desk that there are no charges at all of the attempted Internet access on our bill. So that is a start but a pretty weak one.

We got up bright and early this morning and got straight out to EPCOT first thing in the morning. We had to wait quite a while for the park to open we were there so early. We were one of the first one hundred or so through the front gates and got to pretty much do anything that we wanted with no one around us. Boy was that nice. We did Spaceship Earth right away. That is three times around on that ride. Then we did Living with the Land. That is our fourth time on that ride this trip and my thirteenth time overall. I took more videos of it as well. Those two rides were the sum total of the rides that we actually like in EPCOT’s Future World. After that we were pretty bored. We would have liken to have done the Universe of Energy ride again but it is so long that we didn’t feel like going through it all. We only like the ride portion and not all of the movie stuff that is played both before and after the actual ride and that constitutes well over fifty percent of the total time of the ride so we didn’t do that.

We sat on the side of the lake near the eastern entrance to the World Showcase and just relaxed with some coffee and cheese danishes while we waited for the other half of EPCOT to open. We had exhausted Future World and everything that we were interested in doing in it more than once and we ready to do something else. The World Showcase opened at 11:00 and we were ready to go right in. We had done all of the attractions in the World Showcase but wanted to spend some time checking out the architecture and some foods that we hadn’t had a chance to try yet. So we just relaxed and milled about. We started in Morocco. There was supposed to have been a tour of Morocco but when we got there they informed us that there was no tour. So much for guide books. We did walk all over the area checking everything out and I did find a hidden Mickey there as well. We hung around until 11:30 and then got an appetizer from the Morocco Food and Wine Festival kiosk and then lunch from the Cafe Tangierine restaurant which is located right in the middle of the Morocco area. The lunch was very good, healthy and refreshing. I was happy that we had decided to eat there. The food that we are eating here is completely different from what we normally eat at home and it makes for a really nice change of pace.

After Morocco we took a slow stroll through the World Showcase taking lots of pictures and just taking it easy. We were in no hurry today at all. We stopped in Norway and Mexico and did those rides again while we were there. Once we finished in Mexico we decided to leave EPCOT and go look at a few of the resorts which Dominica had never seen. First we went over to the Contemporary Resort which is the same resort that I stayed in with my parents in 1987. We have been hoping that we would be able to eat at Chef Mickey’s at some point but we were not able to get reservations for it so we gave up on trying. I took Min around the hotel a little so that she could see it. That was fun but didn’t last for very long. We still had some time to kill before dinner at the Crystal Palace so we took the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom and from there took a boat over to the Wilderness Lodge so that Min could see that as well. We explored the lodge for a little bit and then went back to the Magic Kingdom via the bus so that we could get dinner.

Dinner was at 4:30 at the Crystal Palace which is located at the head of Main Street USA. This is a character dinner with Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger. It was an American Buffet in a beautiful Victorian and British Colonial themed garden house. The food was excellent. I didn’t like it as much as the Garden Grill or Boma but it was very, very good. The salmon here might have been the best that we have had all week although I feel that the Liberty Tree Tavern may get the award in that category. We had a really good time at dinner and got some good pictures of Min and I with some of the characters from the hundred acre wood. No luck getting to Winnie himself, however, because of the long lines of small children pressing in around him. This buffet was definitely packed with kids and was extremely noisy. It was really annoying in that regard. But we had fun.

After dinner we hung out in the Magic Kingdom and did some stuff that Dominica had wanted to get back to. We finally got a chance to ride Space Mountain although we ended up discovering that we don’t enjy roller coasters at all anymore. We also finally managed to have our rematch on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Command Spin or whatever it is called. This time Dominica made me steer and shoot at the same time which she claimed made it so hard for her last time. So I sat on the left instead of the right and I “drove” our spacecraft. This time she managed to score 68,400 – up 40,000 from last time. I scored 270,300 which put me well in the lead. I am not sure that she is going to be looking for a rematch anytime soon. We got to go on the Carousel of Progress again and rode the WEDway People Mover twice. Then Splash Mountain and it was time to get back to the shuttle in EPCOT.

There were twenty-one people waiting for the shuttle tonight and they only bring a van to pick us up so we were stuck there for a little while while another van came around to get us. We were back in the hotel around 10:30. Of course, no Internet access still tonight and, of course, Audioblogger has been down all day so we have had no way to keep everyone up to date throughout the day. We are very sad about that. Tonight the front desk attendant said that the Internet provider told the hotel that they didn’t know whether or not they were servicing them anymore so the hotel can’t even tell us if they have a contract or anything for Internet access. That is just great. I want to know whom I spoke with two days before we came down here that confirmed the Internet access for me. I wish that people working in hotels would realize that I am calling because I actually need to know not just because I like talking on the phone. They never really check or ask but the Internet never actually works. I can’t believe how often that ends up being an issue. So it looks like I won’t be able to post this daily until later. Maybe not until we get back in New York on Monday.

Dominica and I did our evening podcast from the hotel and I whipped up a ton of photos from today to upload to Flickr. Two videos are ready to be posted to OurMedia as well. Now all I need is a few minutes of Internet access and I should be all set. Cross your fingers. There has been under fifteen seconds of access all night tonight.

Our plan tomorrow is to do some shopping in the morning and then to go to the Grand Floridian Resort and have afternoon tea. We all ready have reservations there for that. Then we are going to go back to EPCOT where we plan to hit the UK for some fish and chips, Morocco for some hummus and flatbread, France for some crepes and Norway for an almond covered sweet pretzel. Our plan is to make it back to the 6:00 pm shuttle so that we can be in the hotel and as packed as possible by 7:00. We need to get to bed very early tomorrow because our flight is very early in the morning and we need to be up and moving.

After our time in the Magic Kingdom this evening, I have really discovered that I really don’t enjoy the Disney parks. I love the food and all of the little detail stuff like the horticulture. But as far as actually enjoying the parks I am afraid that I would, for the most part, prefer to just stay home or even just sit in the hotel room (assuming that there was actually Internet access or something on television.) Almost none of the rides are very enjoyable for me and the ones that are are almost entirely unable to be enjoyable once you take into account the queue that one must work through in order to get to go on the ride. I am not too big on the short musical shows that they do all over the park even though they are very well done. It just isn’t something that I have ever liked. Musicals for musicals sake. And I really do not like parades and fireworks and there is just so much of that. I wouldn’t mind the shopping so much but every shop is packed beyond capacity and it is very uncomfortable to be in any store and so much of what they are selling is total rubbish. Unless you just need a bunch of Disney stuff, Walt Disney World is a very poor place to be doing any type of normal shopping. Once you eliminate those items you are pretty much left with Disney as a very expensive way to eat a lot of really good food. I really do enjoy the World Showcase and am able to get a lot out of that area but that is still only so much beyond food. The whole area really just becomes an extremely elaborate seating area with great architecture. I have never liked thrill rides so the fact that Disney has begun switching over to a thrill park (slowly but surely) is rapidly making the whole experience one that I would rather pass up. It is tough to say that I really don’t enjoy the parks because there really is so much about Disney World that I really love but after today I finally came to realize that I really don’t enjoy the park portion of the resort hardly at all. Now that EPCOT Future World is almost gone – only two enjoyable attractions left IMHO – that whole park seems to have vanished. And MGM has gone to the dogs and that might as well not even exist anymore as far as I am concerned. The Animal Kingdom is too small to have any significant impact. It is a light half day park at best even though almost all of it is really good. But so many people go there that it isn’t very comfortable to really spend any relaxed time there. That only leaves the Magic Kingdom and that is where I felt so stronly tonight that I would have rather just been in the hotel. I think that I still like the Magic Kingdom early in the morning but as the day wears on and the park fills up with rude people and their rude children I begin to lose any sense of fun that I might have started out with.

One of the reasons that I am putting all of this down now is so that I can look back and remind myself why I don’t really want to return to Disney World. I know that in several years from now the inclination to return will hit me and I will think back to all of the parts that I really love about Disney World and I will want to spend all kinds of money to come back. But I need to go back and read this post and remember that I really don’t want to come back. There is a lot of fun here but most of it is in the nostalgia and there isn’t all that much of that left anymore. When I walk down Main Street USA in the bright, early morning sunlight I think back to being eleven years old and my parents walking me down that street for the very first time on my way to breakfast at the Crystal Palace and then to ride the Jungle Cruise and Pirates of the Carribbean in Adventureland and all of that feeling of being a little kid and the wonder and excitement comes flooding back. But it is over so quickly and the reality of most of the good rides having been replaced or just closed and Main Street being so busy that you can never just walk down it anymore. Now it is just a standing parking lot for people where obnoxious parents with infants in strollers stand and watch the same parade and fireworks display every evening over and over again. Thousands of insane shoppers packed elbow to elbow in stores paying $50 for tin, made in China toys that they would never have considered paying $5 back in the real world. Toys that their kids only want because they are in Disney World and anything that they sell must be awesome. I remember collecting pins in 1987. I collected all that there were to collect including the anniversary pin. I returned in 1992 and got the next anniversary pin. My collection was complete. Today there are thousands of pins and you can buy any one of them anywhere. There are whole stores dedicated just to pins and the company maintains a computerized tracking system to help shoppers get to the stores with the pins that they need for their pin collectors books. It is a different world.

Of course, when I first went there were only two hotels. And only the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT were there. EPCOT was only five years old. Every ride was shiny and new and the best thing ever. The Magic Kingdom was only fifteen years old. Disney-MGM Studios hadn’t even been built yet. Typhoon Lagoon didn’t exist either. Just Water Country – the old swimming hole was there. And zoological pursuits were handled by Discovery Island a small working zoo on an island in Bay Lake next to the Contemporary Result. Today, being older, I feel that MGM is still the new kid on the block and that the Animal Kingdom is still being worked on. But MGM is over fifteen years old – older today than the entire park was when I first went and the Animal Kingdom is much older than EPCOT was back then. Maybe a lot of what I am seeing is a park that is aging rapidly. It is definitely true that the EPCOT rides that remain from 1982 are showing their age horribly and the technologies that made the park so awesome and groundbreaking in 1972 are just expensive and nothing special today. Now where is the park supposed to go? How is Disney to keep being groundbreaking year after year? They can’t, most likely, and that is very sad. But there is a lot that they could be doing and are not. Not even having a web site to get any real information about the park is a real problem. The park feels barely automated. Reservations made on the central reservation system take hours to reach on property restaurants. How can that be? I can barely imagine a system being designed with such a flaw included in it. But we saw today that much of their software today is still from 1993 and Windows for Workgroups. I actually talked to someone today about their aging computer systems and they said that it was really bad. The main reservation system is still a text terminal application and the different systems don’t tie in together. It is severely outdated and the company is unable to deliver many guest services because of it. Things that are just expected and commonplace elsewhere today are missing in Disney because they are failing to reinvent themelves at the same pace that everyone else is doing so. They can’t keep this up for long. Walt Disney World is rapidly losing its relevance. They need to figure out what it was about that original park that was so amazing that it brought people in in droves because they don’t have it today. The people still come but how long will it last? The kids coming today, I don’t feel, are making those memories like I did and won’t want to return the way that I do. I can’t stand the idea of not coming back for a long time. Disney World is like an old friend to me. A friend that I miss when I am away and feel a special attachment to. I feel like Disney has done a lot of growing old with me. I have spent an entire month of my life here all ready. I have seen so many restaurants, stores, rides, even two parks, come and go. I watched this place change in so many ways that I can barely recognize it anymore. But it is still Disney World under there somewhere. But so much is missing.

I really do hope that Walt Disney World gets on the ball and figures this still out. There is a lot at stake here to lose. I hope that my kids can go to Disney World and have a similarly awesome experience to the one that I had all of those years ago. But that sure won’t happen with the park that is there now. Something has to change. Something major. I don’t have the answer but I can tell you that status quo rides and cow towing to the thrill audience from Six Flags is a sure road to destruction. Disney was different. That made it special. If they don’t keep that uniqueness they won’t be able to overcome their overwhelming tax burdens in the years to come. The whole park needs to be revitalized. They need to keep making rides that no one else can make. Rides that take artistry, forethought and patience. Rides that spark our imagination. Rides that adults and children BOTH love to ride together. Rides that teach us. Rides that relax us. If that formula changes, I don’t see how Disney can survive in the long run.
