I actually got out of bed around 4:30 this morning. That is awfully early for me. I went to bed just before midnight and with my weird sleep yesterday, I was up pretty early. I actually like working early in the morning, though, I should really do it more often. I like it because whenever I work during non-regular working hours, I always think of a million things that need to get taken care of – normally things that involve contacting someone – and if I think of those things at night, then it is a long time before I actually have a chance to do anything about them. It is also nice because Min is awake and at work when I get up early so I am able to talk to her if I need to. I really should start making an effort to be up at this time more often. Many of our clients work these hours and almost none of them work late. And my dad is normally up by 5:00 too. And Eric is normally at work fairly early. So I have a lot of communications that I can do if I am up early enough.

Min got us a free hotel room through work in Pittsburgh next week. We will be staying at the Marriott Courtyard in downtown Pittsburgh on Wednesday and Thursday nights. We might stay longer but we don’t know what the plans are going to be like yet. We can only get a maximum of two nights in any given hotel, so if we decide to stay longer than we need to move to a different hotel for Friday night. So we might not do it just because of the hassle. We have discovered, though, that we like staying at Courtyards and Fairfields more than regular Marriotts and Renaissances, even though they are normally far less expensive, because they include high speed Internet access and the more expensive hotels do not. And $10 per day for Internet access that you can barely use is ridiculous and if you are staying for only one night, you could easily end up paying $20 for Internet access for only an hour or two of checking your email.

I spent most of the early morning, that is, before Dominica got home, working on some SkillSoft training that I am doing as I work towards my MCDBA certification. The guy that I had a meeting with yesterday has his MCSE+I and MCDBA – he is the first person I have ever met with more Microsoft certifications than me, so I am really driven now to get it wrapped up. Then, at least, I will be on even footing.

Andy is getting pretty worried about staying at Wegmans. They have been talking about moving him from development to support which is just about his least favorite thing in the universe. They are also talking about getting him a pager, although he is pretty sure that they will come to their senses first, which will be a really big pain since he isn’t salaried. So, we will see how long he ends up actually staying at Wegmans. He was originally scheduled to shift to support next week but they have pushed it off until the week of the 24th, the same week that I am supposed to be returning to Wegmans to begin their in-store server migration project.

When Min got home this morning, the hamster got up and decided that he wanted to do something fun. So he came down to say hello and convinced us to open his cage. Then he ran over and climbed into his ball. He was very serious about running in his ball. Normally he walks around and kind of thinks about maybe getting into his ball. But this morning he ran straight for it and climbed right in – he was very determined. So Min went to bed and I let him run around the house like the crazy little rodent that he is.

I have a 10:30 meeting this morning with the Chamber of Commerce out here in Geneseo. They have a new office building that I have been wanting to see.

Niagara dropped our advertising in the Rochester Southern Area directory today. We have noticed, over the past year, that not a single company has contacted us through the directory but tons of people have called looking to get free service or advice from us. They never even ask us for help either, we answer the phone and they immediately say things like “My computer doesn’t work, has Microsoft said anything?” I don’t even know what that means. But I am sure that anyone who thinks that Microsoft calls us when their ESP tells them that someone’s computer is “not working” is not prepared to pay $45/hr to have a consultant come out to their “place of business” to help them out.

I called over to my ear, nose and throat doctor and they called over and kicked some butt, apparently, and the sleep center called me almost right away. They are coming over tomorrow afternoon with my CPAP machine. Boy am I looking forward to that. Hopefully tonight will be my last night of crappy sleep. And in time to go to Pittsburgh too. Eric might be going to Pittsburgh with us and he doesn’t sleep when I snore. But with the CPAP, I shouldn’t be snoring anymore. In theory, at least. I am sure that it will take a while to get used to. It will be really weird just sleeping again let alone not snoring or getting to sleep on my back!

My meeting with the Chamber of Commerce went really well. Their new offices are really nice. They have a conference room there that we are able to use pretty much whenever we need it. It is really nice and very large for a conference room in Livingston County. I had a good talk over there and I think that we were very productive.

After my morning meeting, I ran over to McDonald’s for some quick lunch. I got a call and ended up spending almost an hour standing outside of McDonalds freezing my hand off talking on my cell. The rest of the afternoon ended up being mostly me on the phone dealing with one thing or another. Mostly good stuff though. Nothing too bad.

Apple released their Mac Mini today. We have been “patiently” awaiting this release for weeks now, every since someone leaked the news that it was coming. Andy, John “The Surfing IT Wizard” Stephens and I have been really looking forward to this little machine. This is the first affordable Apple Macintosh computer ever made. They start at only $499 and are really practical computers – for Macs. They aren’t screaming fast (but what Macs are) but they are totally functional and very tiny and they use very little power. They are really designed to be second computers or primary computers for people with very minor needs. And they are perfect for that. They aren’t expandable but they are SO small – only 6.5″ x 6.5″ x 2″!! They are barely big enough to get a CD into. Apple’s online store is completely swamped with orders – you can barely get to the site at all. The machines are very attractive and I think that they are going to represent a real change in the way that Apple sees its customers. I think that tons of IT professionals and computer power users who have wanted to play with Macs but have been reluctant due to their ridiculous price ranges and childish “built in monitors” will finally give them a try. This isn’t to say that I think that many people will be impressed with the Mac operating system. I have used it and I think it is total crap. But I am sure that there are some really cool features that will be very interesting to learn about. And Mac OS X is worlds better than its predecessors at least. I still think that a faster PC for the same money is a better way to go for most people, but for those of us whose jobs it is to know all of the options and how to work with them, this represents a real opportunity. There are benefits to almost all systems – operating systems like databases are so complex that almost anything that makes it to market has at least some awesome feature that we can all learn from. I won’t mind using a Mac as long as it isn’t $3000. My biggest objection to the Mac family (although I DO completely hate their little kid interface) is their cost. People like to talk about how fast $2800 Macs are compared to $800 PCs. It’s true, for $2000 more, the Mac IS faster. But have you ever clocked a $2800 PC? Apple is proud of having a dual processor machine for that price. But the Windows world has had that since about 1994. And the Linux crowd regularly makes quad processor systems. For $2800, you had better EXPECT a Quad 64-bit system!

Phildo called (by the way, when I say Phildo I don’t mean the Phildo of Phildo.org or the Phildo of Phildo.com) and said that he was coming over to watch some Star Trek with Andy. Kate had to work late tonight or something and he was lonely so he decided to stop by. Min was still sleeping when he called so I had to go get her up. Suddenly she is in an Aunt Cookies mood (after a year of complaining that she doens’t like subs) and had me run downtown to pick some up. I am happy with the change of pace, though, because I LOVE their subs.

Min and I watched the next to last episode of A Fine Romance while we had dinner. Then everyone but me watched Star Trek. I had work that I had to do, plus I had to update SGL. But mostly, I just can’t handle watching that awful show. I liked it as a kid but recently I have realized that I don’t like it at all (even though I love the original movies!) I find that I simply cannot keep myself awake at all as long as it is on. Even the best episodes don’t do anything for me. So I avoid watching it.

Our new humidifier that we got about two months ago isn’t working anymore. It is leaking water all over the place. It just started last night. At one point, water was running out of the back of it. If I get a chance, I will have to look into it. I will probably have to take it apart to see how it works to see if I can fix it. I am not very good at that though.

There is new Strongbad Email on Home Star Runner today. Dreamail.

I finally got a chance to talk to John Nicklin tonight. I haven’t been able to get a hold of him in weeks. He has been really busy dealing with things in DC. He is picking up my AS/400 on Thursday. I am really excited to get it here (that could take a while longer.) How cool is it to have an AS/400? Okay, I guess that there is probably no one reading this that cares in the least. But let me tell you, it is really cool. It isn’t coming here, though. Everyone keeps asking me how we will get it into the basement. It is going over to the farm. We are going to be putting in a new floor and setting it up over there in the near future. I also have a DEC VAX that is going over there. That is really cool too but not in the same ballpark. Very little compares with an AS/400. A real mainframe would compare. An IBM S/390 would be cooler. That is next on my list. I already know where one is that might be available in a year or two 😉

Well, so far, we are well on our way to one of the busiest months ever on SGL. Busiest being defined as the most updates with the most content. This is day fifteen of continuous updates. It is nice to be back in form again. It is working well, at the moment, because I am working from home almost all of the time and I have access to the files that I need right on my desktop. But, since we internally use Desktop Assurance now from Niagara Telecom, in theory, I will have access to all of the files that I need even when I am out on the road which has always been what stopped me from doing updates before. Now I have instant access to everything that I need on just about any machine on which I might be working – even client computers of other companies. Isn’t that just nifty?

Amazon emailed all of their loyal Coupling fans to let us know that Coupling: Season Four is releasing on January 25th. So, in support of SGL, please go to the Amazon link on the navigation bar and order your copy of Coupling: Season Four!

I didn’t manage to get to bed until well after 7:00 this morning. I was doing some work last night and accidentally killed the email server. So that meant that I had no choice but to work until it worked and it really needed to be fixed before start of business this morning. So that made for a very, very long night. I really should learn not to do things like that late at night, this always happens.

I woke up briefly when Min got home around 7:45 and then was pretty much up by 8:30 because people needed me all morning for one thing or another. I never get a chance to sleep when I really need it.

Around 11:20 I headed out for Rochester for a meeting at the Pakistan House in Brighton. The food there is really amazing and their lunch buffet is really cheap. Everyone should get out there and try them out. They have never been busy any time that I have been there which is very sad because the food is amazing and the staff is genuinly awesome. It is definitely one of the best restaurants in the area and we need to make sure that they don’t go out of business.

I came back home around 3:00 and promptly went to bed. I didn’t feel all that tired but I was out like a light and slept until after Min had gotten up and showered around 7:00. Altogether, that is only about five hours of sleep, but still. I felt like crap, though, the rest of the day. Sometimes, when my sleep pattern gets disrupted, I just end up feeling awful all day no matter what I do. I haven’t figured out yet what causes that.

Speaking of sleeping – still no work on my CPAP machine. It has been an entire month and the Associated Sleep Center still hasn’t bothered to do anything about the second sleep study that I did. A month is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for nothing. I am not even waiting for anything to be done. All they have to do is officially send the recommendation over to my doctor to have everything taken care of. But they just don’t bother. I actually believe that they have lost my records and are trying to cover for it. Because at one point they said that they had submitted them to my doctor and that was about three weeks ago. Then a week later they said that they had just sent them to an internal doctor. The bottom line is, they really don’t know what is going on there at all. And really it would be a million times easier for me to just go out and buy a CPAP machine on my own anyway. It isn’t like a drug or anything, you can just get them at the store or on eBay. Which is sounding more and more like the way to go and just cut the doctor out of the picture.

Min, Andy and I went out to Aunt Cookies to get some subs for dinner. It isn’t often that Min is in the mood for subs so we have to take our opportunities when we get them.

After we got back, Min and I watched another three episodes of A Fine Romance: Season Three, only two more episodes to go after this.

Min and I are hoping to be able to schedule a trip down to Pittsburgh late next week. It is just about our last chance to use some of her free hotel stays that she gets with her job during the winter and I need to do some work down there so we thought that it would be a nice opportunity for us to get down there. So we will see what we can schedule but we will probably be down there two or three nights next week. I am supposed to be back at Wegmans the week after next and I will be really busy once I am back there.

I had to get up and get moving this morning because I had to have Jeremy home by 9:30 so that he could practice for his duet with his dad at church this morning. I am definitely not used to getting up early on a Sunday morning. Min was not able to get out of bed when I did, though, so she is still sleeping. Jeremy is planning on having an AoE2 LAN party on Friday. He has two of his friends from school coming over and me coming over to be on his team to show them how the game is played. That will be nice because I haven’t played in a month or two.

I got back home and Min was still sleeping. So I had to get her up to get her ready for church. We actually got to church on time today which is pretty amazing for us. We are always late whenever we go over to LaGrange. It is always farther away than we think that it is.

After church we went over to Perry as usual and had lunch with dad at the Silver Lake Family Restaurant. Min and I got back just in time for her to get ready and to head off to work. I won’t really see her again until Wednesday 🙁

I had plenty of work to do today. Nate stopped by around 5:00 to pick up some stuff that he is taking down to Ithaca for me. I was lucky that he was up this way this weekend so that I didn’t have to make the trip down to Ithaca unnecessarily. The last thing I need this week is extra driving and losing an entire day dealing with little things. I have a quite busy week this week and will be out of the office for much of the week. I have either meetings or appointments almost every day.

I talked to Cory Weiss today and we decided to get together for coffee or light dinner since neither of us has seen each other in months. He has a new job up in Rochester that keeps him really busy. He is travelling most of the time to far away places like Texas, Idaho and California.

Well, Cory disappeared on me and I wasn’t able to get a hold of him so Andy and I ended up going out for dinner at Tom Wahl’s. That was good, I hadn’t been there in a while. After we got back, I decided to take it easy for a while and watch some movies. I watched Flight of the Intruder and Gangs of New York. I had never seen Gangs before, that is a really good movie. I was wondering why everyone kept saying that it was so violent but now I know. Daniel Day-Lewis is really amazing. You can’t even believe that it is him at all.

For all of you Linux fans out there, SUSE 9.2 Professional was released to the mirrors today. So the site will be SO busy for the next few days but it is out there so get your downloads started. Or, wait for me to get mine and I can get copies out to you. We have been waiting for this for months. Now I can really start work on getting the Castile school’s systems together that have been waiting on this release. They actually released a bit earlier than expected. They had original said the middle of January, then the tenth and now they actually released on the eighth. I think that they new owners, Novell, are really having a positive impact on SUSE.

I started the SUSE download for x86 at 11:50 this morning. Georgia Tech is the first place that I found that had everything posted. They are awfully busy, we will see how many days it takes to get everything downloaded. It probably won’t finish up until Monday since it will keep getting slower throughout the day as people realize that it is up.

The first mirror that I tried to get the SUSE download from was so busy that it stopped after just a few minutes and wouldn’t let me reconnect so I tried a different site. Starting again at noon, we will see how this one goes.

Our phones are really awful today because of all of the downloads. The download process turned into a real headache. Only a couple of mirrors got replicated this morning and they stopped functioning from all of the people trying to get to them.

Jeremy was thinking about coming over today but then realized that he had solo festival today. So he is busy playing trumpet today but might come over later tonight.

In the middle of the afternoon, I finally located some SUSE mirrors in Germany that are still working, which is surprising since it is early evening there. I am hoping that as it comes closer to Saturday night in Germany that people will be downloading less and less so that I can get a piece of the bandwidth.

Min and Andy decided to return to Borders and do some more shopping. Andy was heading up anyway and since I am busy working on the SUSE download, Min decided to go up and do the shopping that she didn’t get a chance to do last night. They took off a little after 2:30. There is a bit of snow out today, it apparently snowed during the night and a bit of the morning. They decided to get food up there and leave me home to fend for myself. Luckily I had thought ahead a few days ago and picked up some vegetarian corn dogs so I am all prepared.

Min and Andy went out to Perkins while I sat at home and worked 🙁 They got back around 6:30 just as I was about to head out to pick up Jeremy. He is coming over to work on some programming stuff this evening.

I drove over to Leicester to pick up Jeremy around 7:00. He came over and did some Java programming. I worked with him on his understanding of Object Oriented Concepts. OO is really difficult to learn on your own, it is very abstract and non-intuitive when you are first working with it. It took me a long time to get used to it myself and even now I am reading “The Object Oriented Thought Process” to get it down even more.

After doing some programming, Jeremy, Min and I watched the second half of Napolean Dynamite which Jeremy’s sister has but he has only had the chance to watch the first half. He thought that that was hilarious. Then the three of us watched the first three episodes of Father Ted: Season One. Jeremy has never seen Father Ted. By the time we were done, it was half past midnight and I was getting pretty tired so we went to bed. Min has been staying up late most nights, though, so she decided to read for a while so that she could fall asleep.

We, now there have been SGL updates for an entire week! This is the first time that I have managed to go that long in about as long as I can remember. I am pretty sure that January now has more updates than any of the past three months have and we are only one week into it!

I have a busy week coming up. I have meetings and appointments away from home every day this week. It has been a while since I have had the chance to really schedule anything normal so it is nice to be getting back into the swing of things.

January 7, 2005

Finally it is Friday. I am really looking forward to the weekend. Min and I stayed up late last night with the Millen’s watching The Return of the King. After they went home, I did a little bit of work on my next certification but was really tired and fell asleep quickly. Min stayed up until 4:00 in the morning playing The Sims 2. I think that this is starting to not be healthy.

Min didn’t get up until after noon. I spent the early part of the day on the phone setting up meetings for next week. Dad came over a little before one and we all went out to the Big Tree Inn in Geneseo for some lunch. It was really good, I was significantly underdressed not thinking that we were going anyplace like that for lunch. I was planning on Denny’s or the Omega Grill.

After lunch, we came back and watched the extended edition of The Two Towers because dad hasn’t seen it yet. We have been trying to get him to watch the series for a while and he has finally agreed to struggle through it. We made it through the first one a few days ago although it wasn’t the extended edition. Those really are long. He was falling asleep during this one. Only one more to go. It will probably be the middle of next week before he manages to watch that one.

We went out to McDonalds after the movie and got a quick dinner. Then Min and I came home and played some air hockey with Andy. But then Min decided to return to her video game upstairs. Andy and I ran out to Wegmans to do some quick shopping – just snacks and stuff.

At 10:00, Min and I decided that we wanted to do some shopping so she and I hopped in the car and drove up to Borders in Henrietta. I have been wanting to get the book “The Object Oriented Thought Process” for a while and Min wanted to look at some knitting magazines and books as usual. We also picked up the third and final season of A Fine Romance starring Judy Dench back in 1983. Then we went over to the Henrietta Walmart to do some small shopping. We closed down both stores and then decided to try the Movies 10 in Brighton to see if anything good was showing there. But there wasn’t anything worth sitting through at all. In fact, they are still running Napolean Dynamite even though it has been out on video for weeks. And at $2 each, that is way too much of the total cost of purchasing that movie to even consider it. Plus I have seen it just recently since both Andy and my cousin own it. So we decided to just come home.

We watched the first three episodes of A Fine Romance: Season 3 before going to bed. We also read in bed because Min has been keeping herself up late every night playing video games. And she really wanted to read some of her new knitting book and I wanted to read some of my new book on Indian history.
