February 27, 2014: Drama Begins

A relatively low key Thursday.  Weather has not been bad, winter is winding down around here.  Normal day in the office today.  The one thing of note about my day today was an excess of online “drama” that I noticed happening.  Today actually was quite an important day but, at the time, I really did not have a feel for it at all.  So it was mostly a quiet evening as events moved in the background to which I was not really privy.

As with many of the days recently, I am so tired by the time that I get home and I get so little time in front of the computer that I am just falling more and more behind in my SGL updates.  I am trying to get caught back up but an really having a tough time doing it.

February 25, 2014: I am 38

Like many birthdays, this one snuck up on my. Thirty eight years old. Very hard to believe. I rarely actually feel that old but, sometimes. I didn’t rush to work this morning, it is my birthday. I get to at least not go in early. So I got in around nine.

Today was a pretty quiet day overall. Not much going on. Got lots of birthday wishes at the office and even a card.

I am on call this week so I came home slightly early so that I would not be driving during the “transition to on call” hour. The evening was pretty quiet. Dominica and I tried to watch some more of “Last Man Standing” but the second season is completely different than the first and is horrible. The show went from really enjoyable and fun and something that we really enjoyed watching to something I did not even want to sit through in a single season. I can’t believe that they have kept it on the air.

Once I got home, Liesl ran to the basement and quickly made me a wonderful birthday card with a drawing of her and me holding hands.  🙂  She is so sweet.  These are the best cards.

Went to bed on the early side. We didn’t do anything special food-wise for my birthday since I am on my diet again.

One of my quietest birthdays ever. I read “The Silver Chair” to the girls and we were all off to bed.

You know that your birthday is not a big event to you when you are writing your blog post about your birthday and when you start writing it you forget that it is even your birthday!  Even after writing the date down, it didn’t occur to me right away!

February 24, 2014: Getting Into TED Talks

Back at work today. The weather was good. Not warm but clear and not super cold. Got into the office early. Today was a pretty good day, very quiet.

On the drive home I finished reading “The Young Unicorns” and started reading “An Endless Ring of Light” which is the last of the “Austin” novels that was written prior to be childhood. There is a later novel that I also plan to read that was written after I had graduated from high school. I find the book series from L’Engle that I have been reading are very fascinating because the series were written starting in the very late 1950s, when my parents were in middle school, but were not finished until the mid of the 1990s when I was starting college. “The Young Unicorns” has, as all of L’Engle’s books seem to, some really ridiculously technology whims that make no sense, even in the context of the era in which it was written, but the storyline and writing is better as it is from a better era of L’Engle’s writing.

I got to watch quite a few TED talks today which was very enjoyable. I’ve learned that my dad is hooked on TED conferences now. I assume that I introduced him to it but I don’t actually know. So I am trying to catch up a bit so that I can follow along with him. So much good material available via TED.

While I was at work today, Dominica assembled one of the office desks that we have at home and set that up in the basement.

This evening I got home and within about half an hour Luciana asked if she could just go to bed. This was early enough that we were pretty surprised but you don’t want to deny a child going to bed when she wants. So we did the night story reading around eight and Luciana was off to bed. Liesl stayed up with us for an hour or two and discovered her first anime series that she started watching and seems to really like. It is a Japanese show but the setting is Germany, not far from where we were while we were last there.

We got to bed decently early tonight. I was pretty exhausted after last night so was glad to get some sleep.

February 23, 2014: Busy Calls Sunday

I was the first one up this morning and was down in the basement for a bit before anyone else woke up. It was a short morning for me. Everyone was up fairly soon after me. I had to lock myself into the basement after not too long as I had a couple of long calls to run and that ate up two and a half hours of my day just on the calls plus a bit of prep time. Probably four hours in total. But it was a productive day, it worked out fine.

I really want to get some “green screen” pop up things for the house to use as backdrops for when doing conference calls or video chatting or whatever. Especially since one of the workstations is in our bedroom and there is no hiding it.

It was late afternoon when I got done with everything. We spent a bit of time this evening watching Tim Allen’s new show that Dominica wanted to watch called “Last Man Standing.” The first season is pretty good. We enjoyed it. It is very, very much like a remake of “Home Improvement” which was a good show in its day.

I’ve had a good week being on diet. Today Dominica decided that she wanted Italian so we ordered in from Nonna’s.

Very quiet day for us.  Just stayed home and relaxed.  Dominica wanted one last day to rest up and catch up on her sleep before I go back to work tomorrow and she is home alone with the girls again.  Still quite behind on SGL but working hard to get caught up now.  Slowly but surely.  Work has been getting a lot more busy as of late which is making it harder and harder to keep caught up.  Dominica spent the whole day relaxing as much as she could.

For me it was a day of calls.  Had my first one at ten in the morning when I gave a long bit of training on how to use Rsync.  That was more than an hour.  Then I got a little break and had another conference call an hour later that went on for a while.  That ate up a large portion of my day.
