April 22, 2013: Dominica Home “Sick”

Dominica had to call in to work today because her back is just as bad as it was yesterday.  We had hoped that it would just be a one day thing and that sleeping on it would be all that she required but that ended up not being the case and today she was stuck in bed all day.  She was good enough that she did not need me to stay home but only barely.  She has her grandfather’s walking stick that was bequeathed to me and is using that to hobble around the house when necessary.  Luckily our sweet girls understood that mommy wasn’t feeling well and they piled into bed with her and the three of them spent the entire day snuggling together in the bed watching shows in our bedroom.

After work I swung into Subway and picked up dinner for everyone.  It is exceptionally handy having a Subway that is right next to our house and directly on my path home – I don’t even need to cross the street to be able to pick up Subway anymore.  That level of convenience definitely will cause us to eat there a lot more often.  Plus walking there is no problem although we already had another Subway well within walking distance.  This one is a nicer walk and next to other things that we might was to use, though.

So tonight was pretty much a “do nothing” night.  We moved Dominica out to the living room so that she could get a break from the bed and sitting in her good recliner in the living room really helped her feel a lot better.

April 21, 2013: Dominica Hurts Her Back

It was a pretty normal, uneventful day today until this afternoon Dominica was doing something with the girls and managed to accidentally twist her back and really hurt herself.  That was early in the afternoon.  So she moved into our bedroom and laid down for the rest of the day.  I still had a lot of work and homework to do today so I was stuck in the office most of the day.  I watched the girls most of the day as Dominica really could not move.

Tonight we went to bed early.  Dominica was hopeful that her back would be feeling better in the morning but I didn’t think that there was much chance of that considering how bad she was feeling all day today.  We will see but I suspect that she will be home all day tomorrow.

April 20, 2013: Hanging Blinds

Ah the weekend, sort of.  I was pretty tired after working late last night and had to get right back into it this morning.  I got a little time to relax today but mostly worked the majority of the day.  I had work to do both at home as well as at the office.

Dominica and I finally got around to hanging two of our new blinds that we got months ago.  They have been hiding in the living room since we bought them.  We got five new blinds – one for the front window and four for the play room where the insulation is non-existent and the sun just heats the room like you wouldn’t believe.  These are the double cell blinds that do a bit of insulating.  We still need all new windows but this is a major step in the right direction.  No need for aluminum foil this summer.  At least I hope not.  And these allow a lot of light in so the house glows with white light while keeping the heat out.  You really need that in Texas.

I worked until pretty late and was on the phone with Art and Danielle for hours.  This evening John Nicholson arrived up from Houston and after dropping off his family he swung by the house, picked me up and around midnight we ran over to Redneck Heaven for some beers.  We hung out there until close then came back to the house and had martinis here until three thirty or so.

April 19, 2013: Luciana in the Snack Cupboard

Had to get up early this morning and do a call with the UK and Liechtenstein.  So I was up and pretty tired after working a little late last night.

I got into the office and Dominica relayed this story to me:

Liesl came to her and said that “Luciana is in the snack cupboard.”

Dominica responded, “That’s okay, she’s allowed to get a snack.”

Liesl implored, “No mom, she’s in the snack cupboard!”

And so she was!

Today was another really long day at the office.  About fourteen hours before I gave up and went home.  It is tough getting home that late on a Friday.  The day is gone, often Luciana is asleep before I even get home.  I barely even get to see Liesl.
