January 3, 2013: First Day Back at Home with the Girls

I worked from home today so that I could stay home and take care of the girls while Dominica was at work. There is no one in the office so there really is no point to me being there.  I say that nearly every day and it just keeps being true.  We had a good time all hanging out together and I have barely seen them so this is our first big day of just us.

The house is a massive disaster from the combination of the mess made by me trying to get things cleaned up and with all of the stuff dump out of the Acadia when the family returned from Houston.

I had a conference call at lunch today that took quite a bit of time but went really well.

Dominica worked a really long day.  They’ve missed her there.  Her job is going really well and she is getting more hours than we had originally planned.  And so far our hit rate of me being able to be home with the girls has been really high which helps a lot with being able to keep the cost of her going to work down.  And she commutes with the super-cheap Spark too.  We have been doing a good job of using that whenever possible and it has been lowering our automotive costs.

Just an evening together as a family.

January 2, 2013: Day with My Girls

Finally a get a day with my girls.  A whole day to myself with them, actually, as Dominica ended up working a long day at the office, effectively skipping lunch and working late.  I am very glad that I stayed home with them as we got a long day together, just us.  Dominica is working long hours at this new job.  She is still only doing two days a week there but she is doing longer hours than we had expected and working from home a few hours too when not in the office.  So she is getting a significant number more hours than the scheduled days would suggest.

Liesl had a lot of fun today showing me all of her new stuff from Christmas.

So today was pretty much all just the girls and I.  We spent a ton of time together just hanging out.  Dominica worked quite a bit this evening from home too.  It was a really long day for her.  But she gets to relax tomorrow.

January 1, 2013: Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone.  This is my last day at home alone.  Dominica and the girls are hanging out in Houston this morning but only for a few hours and then coming back home this afternoon.  The Peaks arrived in Houston this morning so they are all visiting before they head back north.

I did some more cleaning today but not a lot.  I decided that I needed a little downtime and this morning I discovered Steam by Valve which is an online download service for video games.  It is pretty cool.  I love using Kindle and Audible for books and audiobooks and this is very much the same kind of service.

I bought a couple of games on Steam to try it out.  Yesterday I actually bought Fable through Steam and installed it on Dominica’s computer with her new graphics card to try it out.  It was just $2.50 for the game so a pretty safe investment even though I already own it and have played through it on the XBOX 360.  The graphics are a lot crisper on the PC version. On the 360 it is downright blurry.  Of course the difference in resolution is 640×480 vs. 1280×1024.  And one is heavily anti-aliased while the other is not.  So about four times the resolution on the PC version that we have.

I picked up a matching graphics card to Dominica’s yesterday and installed it on my desktop too.  So I have three monitors now as well and can really play some games as well.  I bought the Broken Sword series for a few dollars and decided for five dollars to check out Knights of the Old Republic from Bioware originally for the original XBOX.

KOTOR ended up being a lot of fun, much like an earlier version of Mass Effect, and I got into it a bit.  I managed to play for several hours today.  It doesn’t have the graphics and deep story of Mass Effect but it is older and from an older platform so you can’t complain too much there.  This is not a new game by any stretch.  I really like the writing and pacing of Bioware titles, though, so want to check this one out as I am up to date on all of the Bioware titles that are currently in production (Mass Effect and Dragon Age series.)  I can’t wait until they get Dragon Age 3 out the door!

Dominica left Houston early in the afternoon and arrived in Dallas when it was just getting dark.  Boy is it good to have my girls home again.  I have really missed them.  Liesl and Luciana were extremely excited to be home too.  Both because they missed me (and the house) but also because they have a lot of toys that they have been waiting to get to play with that they were not allowed to play with until they got home.

Evening with the family, but a short evening as everyone is tired.  I am staying home with the kids tomorrow while Dominica goes to the office.

December 31, 2012: Lonely New Year’s Eve

Today is my last day home alone without my family.  Dominica and the girls are planning on driving up from Houston tomorrow since Dominica needs to be in the office on the second.

I spent the day quietly at the office today.  It was completely dead.  There was both nothing to do as well as no one physically in the office.  There were just two of us.  A total ghost town.  It felt like we were in the office on a weekend.  Very strange.

At lunch we decided to just work from home as it was pretty silly to be in the office alone.  Just a waste of time to be sitting there.

I managed to do a bit more cleaning this afternoon around the house.  I worked on the garage and really got a ton of stuff done.  It is looking great now.  There is some floor cleaning, mostly sweeping, that needs to be done but I’ll wait until tomorrow on that so that I have daylight.  We can totally move around and find stuff in the garage now.  It is awesome.  This makes me very happy.

I had originally been invited out to a private party in Stephensville tonight but decided that I did not have the energy for five hours of driving for New Year’s Eve.  That is way more than I care about celebrating.  So tonight, around ten thirty, I went over to Redneck and hung out there.  I was hungry anyway so I got dinner, had a beer, watched the ball drop in New York and then watched it become midnight in Texas and went home.  That was my exciting night.  I treated myself to calorie-rich Shocktop.  I know, what a party animal.  It was pretty depressing being there alone on New Year’s Eve.

I ran home and grabbed my copy of Mass Effect for the XBOX 360 and ran back to Redneck with it because Nicki had wanted to borrow it and she was there and I keep forgetting to get it to her.  Since I had nothing else to do tonight, it seemed like a good use of the time.

Got home and went to bed.

December 30, 2012: Big Garage Cleaning Day

Today was actually a productive day for me.  I went no where, which helped a lot, and just stayed home trying to actually get things done.

I managed to finish up all of the dishes so the kitchen isn’t looking too badly.  Would have been nice if I would have done that two weeks ago, then I could have had a clean kitchen all of this time.  But whatever, it isn’t like a single person, other than myself, has been to this house since Dominica and the girls left.  So whatever.

I got the rest of the house Rug Doctored today.  That was the hallway and both of the girls’ rooms.  Neither of them was really dirty at all, even Liesl’s, but since I was doing the cleaning anyway and clean carpets do make for healthy rooms.  The bleach in the cleaning fluid must kill a lot of things living in the carpets so I see it as a good thing no matter what.  The process also forces me to get everything off of their floors and clean up their rooms – not a big deal for Luciana’s room but a decent undertaking for Liesl’s room – the toy disaster area.  It probably took half an hour just to clean up Liesl’s floor.  So I did a full pass of normal Rug Doctor cleaning, including a quick pass into the entry of Dominica and my room which sees the most traffic, and then a full pass of just hot water to rinse afterwards.  Most people skip rinsing and that really makes a difference for getting the carpets clean.

I watched Tomorrow Never Dies this afternoon and put in The World is Not Enough but never finished it, I never even made it very far into it.

I got super productive this evening and went out into the garage and worked like crazy.  I got several loads of things moved up to the attic, threw out a lot of stuff and got some stuff sorted and moved into the house, like two additional boxes of books, which were hiding in the garage.  I can’t believe that more books were hiding out there.  The number of books in this house is just crazy.

Going through the garage and attic is always very sobering.  Whether it is realizing all of the stuff that we own that we never, ever use or have any need to have purchased or finding things like a large box containing nothing except for Oreo’s old bedding or finding his original blood work that we had done in 2006 when we were trying to find the source of his seizures.  I did find a lot of things that were just “missing” like movies that we had been looking for.  The garage has become such a mess that we are really losing things in it.  We just don’t have enough space for our garage to become a pile of stuff.  I had to resort to moving things like our back porch screen door and two strollers into the attic.  That stuff can go six months to a year or more without being needed and having it in the way all of the time just doesn’t work.  And, with the strollers, as Liesl gets older there is less and less chance that she will ever need to use a stroller again and Luciana almost never uses one as it is.  So having a single stroller as well as a double stroller taking up valuable garage space doesn’t work out well as they take a lot of garage space.

I found one entire bin just of Dominica’s Vera Bradley purses and bags.  She needs to figure out where these things are going to go.  Storing them in bins to find a decade later seems like a bad idea.

There are bins of sweaters and coats and all kinds of weird things in the garage.  I found two bins of kitchen supplies and two more of just glass and stemware.

By the time that I was done I would guess that easily half of the garage floor space had been cleared.  Whether by emptying boxes, throwing things out, moving stuff to the attic or just consolidating onto shelves the garage is now usable and you can move around and look for things that you need.  What a relief.  The mess in the garage has been driving me crazy for a long time.  Now I need to get inside and focus on my office again which I managed to get cleaned up and then had explode again as I tore apart the bins and drawers that I have in there.

I have the shelf in Dominica and my bedroom closet cleared off now too.  We could theoretically actually use that for storage now.  Now to decide what goes up there.

We need to install a shelf into Luciana’s room that will hold the Lego Harry Potter sets that Dominica is building for her to display in there.  That will help a bit as there are Lego boxes and sets sitting on the buffet behind Dominica’s desk making it impossible to use that space in any way.

I stayed up way too late cleaning and writing stuff on Spiceworks.  I have done an immense amount of work cleaning up threads in there this week.  Normally there are around two hundred and ten pages of unresolved threads and I have that down to about one hundred and forty three at the moment.  That is something that I have never seen before.

It was actually after four in the morning when I finally got off to bed.  I was energized from all of the work that I was getting done in the garage and I just did not want to stop.  So I kept going and going.  The house is still a huge disaster but Dominica should be happy with the fact that it is a mess because so much work that desperately needed to be done is getting done.  Once she is here and able to help me go through boxes together and determine what is actually needed and what is not it will be that much better.  Now that there is space to actually work on things we should be able to rocket through a lot of this stuff.  And she can help left things for me so that I can move them up to the attic as well.

I am in the office tomorrow for New Year’s Eve.  I will be home on Tuesday as it is a holiday.  Dominica and the girls will be driving on on New Year’s as Dominica needs to work in town on the second and will be staying home with the girls that day.
