April 17, 2011: Eight Days and Closing

Another busy weekend day.  Lots to be done yet.  Brian is getting ready to go and we are getting ready for the baby.

This evening, Brian and I hit Chili’s for dinner.  Chili’s is right around the corner from the house and we have not used them yet even though they are so close so it was nice to be able to do so.  It was supposed to be a quick in and out trip but the service was really bad and just took forever.  I mean – forever.  Some of the food, like the appetizer,  never arrived at all.  But the food that did arrive was good.  Hopefully it was just a bad day for them.

After dinner, Brian and I had to go in to Irving to do some work for a few hours.  It ended up being after midnight when I finally got back home and was able to get to bed.  It was a long, but productive, evening.  We are trying to make sure that all of our ducks are in a row before Brian leaves to go back home in a few days and before the family arrives to prepare for the baby!

April 16, 2011: Nine Days and Closing

This is the last weekend with Brian still in Texas, he is heading back to Philadelphia later this week and the Grice and Tocco clans are coming in to town in about a week.  Today is our day to get as much done at the house as possible.  Lots of work to do this weekend to get things ready as this is the last “free” weekend before the baby comes.

April 15, 2011: Our First Real Texas Hailstorm

Souder met me for a lunch meeting at La Cima today.

It took long enough but we finally got to experience it for ourselves.  It was a while after I got home from work (work was just a normal, long Friday.)  It was dark out and I was on the phone with Craig when the incoming thunderstorm suddenly became very, very noisy.  It didn’t take long to realize that the banging sound was not rain falling on to the house but hail – hail the size of quarters.

I know that hailstorms are like this pretty often in north Texas but it was something to be at home for the first real one to occur since we moved here.  This was pretty crazy.  We were pretty concerned about our cars that were sitting out in front of the house as the hail was pretty strong.  It was coming down so fast that within a few minutes the atrium was completely covered in ice.  I’ve never seen hail come down so fast and collect so much.  The entire lawn was covered in a layer of ice in no time at all.  Very strange.  And even though it was still pretty warm out the ice stayed for a long time.

After the hail stopped, started again and then finally stopped I went out to inspect the vehicles.  It looks like we survived our first big hail storm without any damage.  Thank goodness.  It is tough having a new car.  We would have been very upset if the Acadia had hail damage before even making it in for its very first oil change.

Speaking of cars – we are seriously contemplating the possibility of getting a new car to replace the ten year old Mazda.  The Mazda is still running fine but it needs a number of repairs, does not get the fuel efficiency of a new car, isn’t looking the best after many winters in New York, needs to be registered in Texas and does not have working air conditioning – even after having had it repaired.  So it is not as cheap as an old, paid off car might be and without working air conditioning it is nearly useless as an emergency backup car for a family with young children in Texas since we could nearly never safely take the children anywhere in that car.  So we are thinking about some alternative options.  The leading contenders are the Chevy Cruze Eco (42 mpg, six speed, small, cheap), the 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco (38 mpg, not available for a year or more, unknown price) and the GMC Terrain (32 mpg, large enough to replace the Acadia in day to day driving, more expensive.)  So we will see.

April 14, 2011: Eleven Days To Go

I had a long phone call early this morning and then drove in to the office.  For lunch today Brian and I had a meeting  up at La Cima.  This is my third time at the club just this week.  I definitely go in spurts.  We already know that we are coming here tomorrow for lunch too.  And, of course, we have our monthly meals left to use and we will be here for brunch next Sunday.

Both of the people that I had lunch with at the club today are thinking about joining the club seriously and took literature.  The club is in a major push to get membership up which would be nice – there is no doubt that it has been pretty slow as of late.  The economy has really been taking its toll on clubs of this nature.  All of them are hurting.

Spent the evening at home with the family.

April 13, 2011: Helen Highfield on Criminal Minds

So tonight my friend and Nate’s old student Helen Highfield is costarring on the CBS television drama Criminal Minds.  I’ve never seen the show before but will make a point of seeing it tonight.  Helen was on Law and Order SVU last year.  We don’t have any means of watching television from home so our plan is to watch the show from La Cima this evening.  What a funny thing to need the club for.

Work was work.  After nearly six years here, there isn’t very much in the way of news.  Especially as I am a permanent contractor.  It isn’t like I can get promoted or anything.  So there isn’t even office drama.

For lunch, Brian and I hit La Cima.  I needed a little relaxation.  I checked the price and, in reality, it costs no more for me to eat lunch at the club than going anywhere else for lunch.

After work I drove home, picked everyone up and we went out to La Cima.  We got there around seven and hung out in the lounge for a bit until it cleared down.  Pretty much everyone left the lounge right at eight so we ran over and snagged the television.  Normally we could use the television anytime that we wanted but Criminal Minds is not the type of show that you put on at the club – it’s not family friendly viewing.

Helen was on right at the beginning and was the first person killed off in the show so we did not have very long to watch.  She did a great job.  It is so cool getting to see people that you know on a major television show.

The club was super quiet tonight.  Just one other table in the lounge and they were not within sight of the television.  The dining room was almost empty so they closed up at eight this evening.

We ate in the lounge for pasta night which turned out to be a great idea because it gave Liesl a lot more freedom to run around and do her own thing.  She hung out on the couch with her iPad instead of sitting with us most of the evening and just ate from the coffee table.  She loved it.  And it was a lot let work for us.  She would run over to our table, get some food and leave.  She was so much more happy.  She never really enjoys sitting still at the table with all of the adults.

We don’t have much longer to use the club before the renovations begin in June.  We will probably go next week, then we go for Easter Brunch.  After that we have a new little baby and will not likely be at the club very often in May.  Then the renovations begin in June and the club is closed for a little while.  The timing is really pretty good for us since we would not be using the club during June very likely anyway.
