February 7, 2011: Full Swing on the Garage Again

Since yesterday was the SuperBowl there was no work done on the house.  That was pretty frustrating because the house is such a crazy mess.  We would love to start working hard on cleaning it up and getting it all ready for real use but we are stuck just living in it while it is a horrible mess.  Ugh.  That’s no fun.  We want to clean the carpets and put all the little things away but we really can’t get into the garage or attic to do anything like that.  So the mess might as well just remain as long as possible as any cleanup that we do today will be wiped away tomorrow.  It is really hard to live in a super dirty house for weeks at a stretch.

The electricians were back today.  Today is the big push.  We are almost there on the electrical.  Hard to believe as this has been going on for quite some time.  Almost all of the big stuff will be done today and soon everything in the house will work.  It will be a while before their drywall guy comes to do the final cleanup, so until then we have many holes in all of our walls.

While I was home at lunch today, our real estate agent called to tell us that the selling brokers on the house that we have been trying to buy, suddenly decided that we had to have the house inspected either today or tomorrow.  They had explicitly told us that we were forbidden to go into the house to do the inspections until we had a signed contract from them which they failed to deliver, even today!  Now we are pissed, suspicious and in a panic to find inspectors who can be here first thing in the morning.

I went into the office today and came home at lunch to help out at the house.

Very good progress today.  Very little to report.  They will be back tomorrow and that should, in theory, be just about the end of that portion of the work.

February 6, 2011: Shopping Day

This morning, quite early, Dominica, Liesl and I got up and headed out to do some much needed grocery shopping so that we are prepared to get through the week.  We have been holding off as long as we could and Dominica, being as pregnant as she is, doesn’t want to go out shopping alone as she could faint.  So we did a family outing for groceries.

We first went to Aldi’s and got the bulk of what we needed.  Fortunately we have several different grocery stores right around the corner from us so going to multiple ones is really easy.  Aldi’s has the best prices and the German food but the selection is really limited and I don’t like their cereals. Fortunately Dominica does because they are super cheap.

Then we went to Kroger to wrap up the rest of our shopping.  That took a while but we got a ton of stuff.

On the way out to the car we were in a mass of people in the parking lot.  The place was packed.  We ended up in a group of people behind an old man driving a car who, apparently, decided that there were too many people walking in the parking aisle in front of him so suddenly put his car into reverse and started backing up – into a crowd of people in the cross walk!

Dominica started yelling, as she had the shopping cart with Liesl in it, and people started jumping out of the way.  Knowing that Dominica couldn’t get Liesl and the cart away if he kept going I went up to the back of the car and hit the trunk to get the driver to stop – hoping he would realize that he was up against a group of people.  We were not the only people behind him and people all over in front of him were waving and yelling for him to stop.

Instead of stopping he decided to put the accelerator to the floor and the car lurched back at me.  Everyone started screaming… Dominica in the unbelievable piercing scream that she is famous for.  How the driver didn’t hear it, I will never know.  I started to go up onto the car to keep him from sucking me under the tires and I beat on the trunk so hard that I probably dented it and am now concerned that I have broken my thumb.

Once he finally got the car to stop moving, the driver put it in neutral, not park, and at least one person there, who had just jumped away in time to not be run over, commented that even when the car stopped the engine was still revving like crazy (no, it was not a Toyota, this was driver error) I went up to yell at him about driving backwards without looking in a crowded crosswalk – he still had no idea that there were people here!  When he opened his door his loose dog jumped out into the busy parking lot and I had to go save it for him before something bad happened to his dog.  This guy clearly had no idea where he was or what he was doing.  Talk about a danger.  He could easily have killed five people or more!

Dominica was quite shaken for some time.  A few minutes after it was over I realized the incredible pain that my right thumb was in.  It felt like a break and was swelling quickly.  Apparently the joint on the knuckle had slammed into the metal of the trunk very, very hard.  I’m in some serious pain.  This is not good as I have a writing assignment due today that I absolutely have to be working on.

We got home and I put my hand on ice.  It was in some serious pain all day.

I spent much of the day in the office working on my writing.  I am also working for “the office” today as we are supporting high volatility emerging markets trading for Egypt with all of the uproar that is going on over there.

I nursed my thumb all day going between ice and heat.  The ice hurt horribly and the heat felt great but, in theory, you aren’t supposed to heat a break.  It didn’t take long before the thumb started turning purple and black.  Ugh.  I can move it though.  So it can only be so bad, I guess.

I got my article done today and we spent a bit of the evening watching Good Luck Charlie. We are really liking that show.

What a long day it was.

February 5, 2011: More Electrical Work

Today is my day to recover from all of the work that I did yesterday.  I slept in a bit and needed it badly.

Our electricians arrived early, tons of work left to do and the weather is finally nice enough that they were able to come back out again and get to work on the house.  Tomorrow is a loss because of some sporting event so today is the one big day to push towards completion of the electrical work.

They got a lot of work done today.  We are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sort of.

It was a quiet day at home. This evening we started watching Good Luck, Charlie from Disney.  It is a fairly new sitcom that we are really liking.  It is, as we can best describe it, an 80s style, family-oriented sitcom done today.  It doesn’t have the feel of other Disney tween-themed sitcoms.  This one is really meant for families and truly does hearken back to the heydey of sitcoms like Who’s the Boss and Growing Pains. It’s a really good show and really is completely perfect for families to watch together.  Liesl loves it because there is a baby on it and she asked for “another baby” to ask for another episode!

At this point we have most of the electrical work done around the house but the garage really hasn’t even begun yet!  It’s been a crazy project.  But at least the house is going to be safe and new.  Hopefully the electrical, at least, will be done this week.

Do IT: Running Your Home Like A Business

It is amazing how any discussion of breaking into IT or advancing your career comes back to the overarching question of “What are you doing at home?”  But this point can’t be overstated.  This applies to nearly all fields (doctors, teachers, lawyers, police, firefighters, etc. are obvious exceptions) but none as obviously as IT – you can do nearly everything you would do at work at home, so if you want to really be at the top of your field, you need to be doing just that.

In IT we see this often because IT professionals very often love what they do, so if you are interviewing at a company there is a very good chance that at least one person that you are up against for that job is doing tons of IT at home, even if they are working full time somewhere else.  In other fields like music or painting we see this too.  But in others like chemistry, even though much could be done at home, it is rare to see this type of career dedication so someone who takes the time to do as much at home as they do at the office will likely skyrocket through their career.  In IT, you need to do this just to keep up.  IT is a very hard field.

In a previous article, I discussed building a home lab and doing many of the tasks that you would do at work, at home.  And that is definitely the place to start.  But we can do more.  Once you have a real lab running at home, it is time to serious begin considering running your home like a business – at least from an IT perspective.  This applies far more to desktop techs, server admins, network techs, etc. than to database admins or developers, for example.  Your mileage will vary here but all experience is good experience.

There are many ways to run your home like a business.  Let’s start with your desktop environments.  Every IT pro has desktops or laptops at home.  Probably several.  Are these being run like a business?  By that I mean, for example, are they pro versions (if you are running Windows), do you have domain authentication (like Active Directory or LDAP), do you run as normal users and only go to administrator for admin tasks, do you manage them with group policy objects, do you have automated maintenance tasks, etc.  Sure, you probably only have a few machines like this and this is complete overkill.  But it isn’t about efficiency, it is about experience and doing things “right”. Anytime that you can say “sure I know how to do that, that’s how I do it at home” you are in better shape than the person who has only done it at a previous job.

Backups are another great example.  Do you have an awesome home backup strategy – one that you would be proud to say you ran in a business?  If not, consider it.  Not only because you want the ability to recover things that you have at home, but also because it makes for great experience.  Doing it right at home makes it more likely that you will do it right at the office.

If your home is anything like mine, you need to track bills, paperwork, taxes and other documents.  Perfect time to implement a document repository system a la SharePoint, LifeRay or Alfresco.  Overkill for your home?  Of course.  But still handy and very cool.

The same goes for storage.  You probably have loads of pictures, music, videos, install files, video games and other things that you need to store and save.  Instead of putting them onto an external hard drive attached to your laptop, my not implement a real NAS – either a commercial appliance like a Netgear ReadyNAS or a server running a NAS appliance operating system like OpenFiler, FreeNAS or Nexenta.  This will give great experience, be quite impressive and provide great home functionality to centralize files, share files between machines and, perhaps best of all, build a media server for your home allowing you to utilize those stored resources in more exciting ways.  A streaming DLNA server can be a great home addition in addition to being a good tech project and a good way to demonstrate value of your projects to other family members.

Setting up a web server and running a family wiki to track household expenses, accounts, repairs, bills, events, etc. can be extremely handy.  Useful in the same ways that it is useful in a normal company.  Very good way in which to keep your family organized and to keep your documentation skills sharp.

Security is, of course, another great area that you can easily practice at home in real world use.  The list is really quite endless.  The bottom line is that at work we have IT because it makes our jobs more efficient allowing us to do more with fewer resources, to make better use of our time.  Why should our homes be any different?  Putting your IT skills to work to make your home run like an efficient business and you can reap the benefits both at home and at work.

February 4, 2011: Working an 18 Hour Day

I had to get up at seven this morning, even though I didn’t get to go to bed until two in the morning last night, so that I could support the non-farm payroll numbers being released.  Getting up with so little sleep gave me a decent headache that lasted most of the day.

I got into my office and immediately noticed that it had apparently been snowing all night and we now had six inches of snow on the ground at our house!  I was sure not expecting to see that when I sat down at my desk.  I guess that it is going to be one of those days.

The office was closed, for obvious reasons.  No one in the DFW Metroplex is going to want to drive in six inches of snow.  It is crazy unsafe out there.

It was a busy morning at work.  I can feel a long day coming on.  I am really glad that I am home today.

Still no work on the house today.  It is going to take forever to get this garage conversion done.  It’s also going to cost a fortune.  We are getting really nervous about that.

This afternoon Souder and Watson were over for a little bit.  They came by and we made a quick run out to an IT supply store that sells racks and cable management stuff.  It was a fun venture going out into the snow and watching the Texans try to drive around.

We did some research and determined that the best bet was going to be just getting a full, 42U rack for the new office rather than trying to save barely anything by making do with smaller units.  And nothing is as cool as a full rack!

Work turned into a neverending disaster tonight.  Not really a disaster but it felt like one.  Just a mountain of work.  Having started the day at seven in the morning, going late was not what I really wanted to do tonight.

I ended up being so buried with work that I didn’t get a chance to wrap up until long after one in the morning!  I worked solid too having skipped lunch and just having a PB&J at my desk that Dominica made for me while I was working.  The only break that I got at all today was that quick run to the supply store.

What a crazy long night.  I never got a chance to even leave my desk.  Dominica was already in bed by the time that I was done for the day.  I was exhausted.
