June 12, 2008: Moving Out (the Musical)

My desktop was finally repaired part-way through the day today so today is my last day at home this week and I will be on Wall Street tomorrow.  Oreo was getting used to this lazy lifestyle.  He isn’t going to be happy about having to get out of bed tomorrow morning.

We got Bridge to Teribithia through NetFlix today.  I am hoping that we can take it with us to Dominica’s parents’ house tomorrow night to watch there.  It is one of the few movies in the last couple years that I care much to see and if we don’t watch it over the weekend I won’t have very much chance to see it.

The weather held in the nineties again today.  Hot but not beyond reason.

This has been a big week for contacting people from my far distant pass.  Several classmates from Pavilion Baptist School, which I attended from 1981 until the spring of 1990, have managed to track me down online.  I think that approximately half of my elementary class are now able to reach each other.  My original class was just eighteen students in kindergarten and again in first grade with only one person changing between kindergarten and first grade.  Then the class began a steady decline over the years getting a little smaller year after year.  I think that there were about ten students left in my eighth grade class the last year that I was at PBS.  That means that we lost about one a year, on average, all the way from first to eighth.  So the group of us was pretty close-knit, as you can imagine.

Dominica had tickets to see “Moving Out” at NJPAC tonight.  She and a friend’s wife from her work were going to go together but her friend’s wife had some minor surgery today and it didn’t go as well as planned and she wasn’t feeling up to going to the show.  I had too much work and not enough warning to be able to go with Dominica tonight so she figured that she would be going by herself.

At seven I walked Min down to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center so that she could go to the show.  I got back to Eleven80 and fortuitously Pam was walking in the door on the other side off of Commerce as I came in off of Raymond.  We had tried to reach her but didn’t know her cell and the conceirge said that she wasn’t home yet.  I just walked over and gave her the ticket and she went right over and joined Dominica at the show.  It really could not have worked out any better than it did.

So I did some work through the evening while Min and Pam were at the show.  They really enjoyed it.  It worked out well as it definitely wasn’t the sort of show that I would really enjoy.  They both really like it, though, so perfect.  Min said that it was all rock music and dance with a really amazing live rock band performing which was the real highlight.  I’m sure that they were amazing but not being a huge fan (it’s good but I’m no fan) of Billy Joel music and not knowing any of the “story” songs that he has done over the years would leave me pretty bored not knowing what was going on.

We watched a little Third Rock from the Sun and it was time for bed.

June 11, 2008: Finally a Break from the Heat

Last night there was an amazing thunderstorm here in Newark.  All of the heat had so much pent up kinetic energy to discharge and it really put on a show.  It was pretty late at night when suddenly we went from calm and stagnant heat to crazy wind, torrential downpour and continuous lighting.

When the storm started, Dominica and I were in our bedroom watching DVDs with the blinds down when Dominica noticed that it was flashing outside.  We went into the living room to see what was going on and realized that it was lighting all around us.  We even got to see the Blue Cross / Blue Shield building due east of us, in the Ironbound, take a direct hit which was pretty cool.  The storm didn’t last too long but boy was it fun to watch.

Because of last night’s storm today’s weather isn’t nearly so bad.  It was a good ten degrees cooler today outside, which is indeed hot, but not the stifling heat that we have had the last few days.

My desktop is still not working so Oreo and I are home yet another day.  Yay!  He is still very tired and totally sleeping his days away.  He isn’t even playing this week, he is so tired.

Ramona was finally around for a change as she needed to run some errands in Newark so we did a late lunch over at Food for Life.  We haven’t seen each other in about a month or more.  Min and I have been so busy that we haven’t seen anyone at all except for Ryan whom I always run into in the lobby.  Our travel schedule has really put a damper on our social lives.

Lunch was nice but we barely were able to even squeeze it in.  My work kept me on a call for hours and finally I had to have someone else take over some work just so that I could run out to lunch at two thirty as Ramona has to be back to Manhattan around four.  She had to walk Oreo for me and everything just so that we would have enough time to eat.  Today might be the last time to easily see Ramona in Newark as she is planning to move out to Flushings in Queens on Long Island over the weekend.

It was another relaxing night for Dominica, Oreo and I.

June 10, 2008: It’s a Hot One

Oreo and I are still home today as my desktop has not yet been fixed at the office.  No complaints here.  The person who broke it did me a huge favour as the last few days have been insanely hot.  I am told by locals that Sunday was actually hotter than yesterday or today but that we missed it since we were in Ohio where it was warm but not crazy hot like this.  Dominica saw the car register 101° on her way home!

I just worked at home today.  Nothing exciting.  Very much a “normal” day.  Boy am I glad that I did not have to walk all the way across the island today.  Way too hot.  I would have felt awful by the time that I arrived at the office.  Oreo is still worn out from last week and this weekend too so he enjoyed his sleep.  He is on antihystamines because of his grass allergies.  He is so itchy.  It is very sad.

We had just a relaxing evening.  We are taking it easy this week trying to get back into the groove of being home.   Dominica decided that she wanted to go to Frankfort this weekend to see her parents as we haven’t been there in a while.  So we are leaving Friday night to go up there. I have to work Saturday morning or else we would have waiting to travel until them to get a little more time at home.

June 9, 2008: We’re Having a Heat Wave

Hot. Hot, hot, hot. There is little else to say about today. Dominica checked the weather mid-day and Newark was registering 102°F (which is 39° Celsius!) And it was sunny too, so just stepping outside meant that you were melting.

Dominica took the day off from work because she knew that she would be so tired that she wouldn’t be able to go to work. I slept from five thirty until seven thirty and then logged in and got started. For some reason I was needed before eight so it was good that I was online early. Two hours of sleep isn’t very much but I’ll live. I got a lot of rest last week so I am feeling pretty good regardless.

Today wasn’t too busy at work – good thing.  It would have been awful otherwise.  My desktop at the office was broken (long story) while I was out last Thursday so I am not heading down to Wall Street until that issue gets resolved.  This is giving Oreo a nice break to stay at home with me and to relax.  He will be home several days this week at the very least.  Staying home with Oreo saves us $30 to $50 per day because we don’t have to pay for me to travel (which is almost nominal given the awesome PATH pricing), Oreo’s daycare, Dominica to drive Oreo to and from daycare or for me to eat in Manhattan.

Dominica came home which is much earlier than usual since she didn’t have to get Oreo.  On days when he is home she gets to leave about fifteen minutes later and gets home thirty to forty minutes earlier.  It is a much shorter day for her.

We spent the evening just relaxing and went to bed early.  I needed to catch up on some sleep.  Later in the week I will get caught up on SGL.

June 8, 2008: Monica’s Graduation Party

Dominica and I slept in quite late this morning.  It was eleven thirty by the time that we were ready to leave the hotel.  We tried to have breakfast with dad at Luna’s but it was far too hot and sunny to be able to leave Oreo in the car.  We drove around looking for someplace to eat but gave up.

We went over to my aunt Cheryl’s house early to see if they needed any help getting set up for the party.  Everything was already ready but we got some time to visit since we barely got a chance to see everyone last night.

We stayed at the graduation party until around eight in the evening.  It was really hot and sunny all day but pretty good weather for a graduation party.  We had intended to leave around five to get on the road back home but didn’t really want to cut our weekend so short.

The drive home went pretty well.  Much better than I would have expected considering it was a sixteen hours on the road weekend for me without Dominica driving a single bit of it.  During the trip we finished listening to Sue Grafton’s latest novel “T is for Trespass” which we have on CD.  “T” is the 20th novel of the Kinsey Millhone series.  Just six more books to go before the series is done.  We didn’t feel that this book was up to par with the rest of the series, though, it completely lacked any personal story on the main character and the plot was weak and the characters far less realistic than in previous books.  It was suddenly like Kinsey had become an idiot and had no idea what she was doing after having been smart in so many previous books.  It is sad that the ongoing story of Kinsey seems to have derailed.  For several novels in the middle of the series it seemed like Grafton was really going to delve into Kinsey and letting us get to know her but in this book she was flat and lifeless as if none of the nineteen previous books had ever occurred.

It was around five in the morning when we finally rolled in to Newark.  I wasn’t really tired and didn’t really need any caffeine while driving.  I had one energy drink about halfway through the trip just because we had stopped someone where to get fuel and to use the restroom so I picked it up.
