My Internet Access (Internetzugang) here in Germany will be shut off in roughly half an hour.  At that time I will be without Internet access until I am settled in in New York on Monday night.  No SGL updates until after that time, I am afraid.  Nothing that I can really do about that.  In the mean time, some pics have been uploaded to Flickr from the 12th and two or three from today.  I will post a handful, likely, while I am traveling tomorrow just to keep people updated.

You can check out my Germany Picture map on Flickr.  It is very cool.  Scroll through the pictures to see them laid out on the map.  It is especially interesting when you start seeing paths that I have walked or see how the pictures lay out around Osnabrueck’s Old Town.

Today is a big day for SGL. Today we moved the web site from hosting in Scranton, PA to hosting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The new site now runs on bigger, faster hardware with a separate database server rather than using MySQL on the web server and is hosted out of a bigger, faster datacenter with, we hope, far better uptime. The move was completed around midnight and the old site was shut down for testing.

Some quick changes to SGL this morning.   I have decided to try using dropdowns for the archives and categories in the sidebar as both of these have become so large that they were cluttering the sidebar and making it useless.  One of the gotchas of having such a large blog.

Also, the Flickr badge has been added back in so that the five more recent photos uploaded to Flickr will appear on the side providing a quick view for people to see if something new has been added and also providing a quick link to the Flickr site which has become increasingly popular now that Liesl has arrived.

While working on other items this evening I decided that it was time to do a needed WordPress update from the 2.5 series to the latest in the 2.6 series.  The upgrade went smoothly and, as you can see, we are back online without a hitch.

Supposedly, the hot new feature of the 2.6 series is that it tracks revisions!  I am looking forward to seeing how this works in action.

We had a datacenter emergency this evening.  The server handling SGL lost a network interface around eleven this evening and we were offline for about an hour.

We also had another really important server completely die tonight.  I worked on that until well after one in the morning.  No luck.

Currently our plans are to sleep, as that is necessary, then to drive to Scranton first thing in the morning and make an assessment of the situation at that point.  I have no idea how bad it is right now and there is nothing that I can do about it from here.  We are preparing for the worst.

Another weekend without any real sleep.  🙁

Today we added my Twitter feed onto the main SGL page.  This should make the impact of my Twittering a lot more meaningful.  Now the last five Twitter updates appear automatically at the top of SGL.  So even when SGL has not been updated recently you can still check in here instead of going to Twitter to see the very latest news.

This also makes following my Twitter feed much easier for people who do not have their own Twitter accounts and therefore are unable to “follow” me on Twitter.

I have received reports today that SGL is infected with a virus or malware and is downloading bad programs onto people’s computers.  However, these reports did not come with any troubleshooting details so we don’t know exactly what people are seeing and if the exploits being witnessed are coming from us or if they are coming from someone pretending to be us which is a popular route as well.  What I can tell you is that according to McAfee SiteAdvisor as well as Exploit Prevention Labs’ LinkScanner SGL is clean as a whistle.  We also have gotten no reports of mischievous behaviour from any other sources.  I ran the site in the most dangerous of web browsers, Internet Explorer, tonight on my completely updated Windows XP Pro machine running Live One Care and it found nothing bad either.  So, I am pretty convinced that we do not have a problem on our hands.

Just to be on the extra safe side I did an operating system update manually but found that we were completely up to date.  I am also undertaking a WordPress update too.  Might as well go all the way, I guess.

If you are reading this then we are happy to announce that SGL has updated to the very latest version of WordPress – 2.0.5!  We were previously running on an older 1.x series WordPress so this is a major update for us.

We are also very pleased to announce that we have also successfully migrated the site from the aging Geneseo Data Center to our brand new facility in Scranton.  I expect that most of our readers will notice a significant increase in the speed and responsiveness of the web site.  We will also, hopefully, eliminate a large percentage of the down time that has been occurring recently.

Yes, we have experienced another outage. We had a drive failure on our main server and our RAID array did not automatically recover. Dad put in an hour or so seeing if he could get it fixed but wasn’t able to get anywhere with it. He wasn’t able to get it to respond so we decided that the best thing for me to do was to come home to Geneseo on Wednesday night and deal with it myself.

We were down from early Wednesday morning when the drive failed until 3:30am on Thursday morning. Almost twenty-four hours but not quite. We are currently running in a “limping” state and have been backed up and are being kept up to date to Newark as we expect the server to go down again.

We are attempt to relocate this machine’s services to a server in Scranton over the next several days.

]]>
Some of you may have noticed the site being down last night. I have been doing some server maintenance and we were out for a few hours. The good news is that we are now getting our time via the time clock at the University of Delaware so the posting times should be right on. In the past they have been off by hours and sometimes don’t make any sense given what the posting states. Ignore any specific times on the posting previous to today. Now everything should be completely accurate to Eastern Standard Time.

Expect outages again as soon as tonight. I am upgrading the server that we are running on. Currently we are running on an Athlon 64 3000+ 754pin which is plenty fast but I am looking for expanded memory capacity so we are installing a new board that takes the 939pin processors. The new Athlon 64 3700+ arrived yesterday and I hope to be installing it this weekend along with the new board and three times the current system memory.

Stay tuned.

There are many ways that you can subscribe to Sheep Guarding Llama. SGL supports both RSS and Atom feed technologies. We suggest the use of RSS 2.0 which we use by default but other options do exist. There are five primary feeds to which you might be interested in subscribing:

The Whole Site Feed
The Dailies Feed
The SGL Podcast
The SGL Vlog
The Comments Feed

Any feed aggregator will work just fine for the text feeds such as the dailies or the comments. I suggest a dedicated reader such as SharpReader or a email client that also reads feeds such as Thunderbird. In order to listen to the podcast try Juice and for the vlog try FireANT.

We at Sheep Guarding Llama have decided that the time has come to take the plunge and move off of the old site and go straight on to the new WordPress based site. There is nothing like quitting cold turkey to get things done quickly. So right now we are in the process of transitioning all of the old content onto this new site. There is a lot of work involved in that process so hang tight while we are working on it. But welcome to the new site. There is a lot of new stuff for you to check out while you are here.

We now have working RSS feeds so that you can subscribe to the site and get your updates through an RSS aggregator. The site has been designed in such a way that you can subscribe to the entire site or to just one portion or another (such as just the dailies, just the podcast, etc.) You can now post comments. You can now permalink to specific articles. The archives are a bit different now and you can jump straight to any month’s listings but you then have to click on the “comments” link at the bottom to read the entire posting. That is a little weird and we might have to work on that.

All in all I think that the new site is incredibly exciting and I am really looking forward to seeing how everyone is going to use the features to make the site a better experience for them.

Today begins the official process of transitioning SGL from running on Windows, IIS and ASP/ASP.NET which it has run on since its inception in the autumn of 2000 to its new home running on Linux, Apache, PHP, MySQL and WordPress. This process will take some time but I am very excited about the site’s future. Running on a content management system will give us the ability to do a lot of really exciting things with the site and should make the site tremendously more usable for our readership. It will also serve to make it far more easy for me to work on the site when I am out of town or away from home.

Thanks, everyone, for coming to check out the work being done on the new site. This “maintenance” post is the first post made exclusively to the WordPress version of the site.
