April 14, 2018: Hanging with the Kids Day

Saturday. I got up this morning and played video games with the kids all morning. It was nice to get a chance to hang out and spend time together.

This afternoon the girls and I did some gardening stuff.

This afternoon Jim managed to get up and replace the exterior LED lights that we have on the front of the house. We had put in the original kit long ago, I bet somewhere around 2011. It is the only major lighting on the whole street and makes our house a very unlikely target for anything nefarious at night. But some years ago the original one burned out or something. Sometime while we were not living in the house. So now it is dangerously dark at night. We managed to get the exact same unit that we originally had to replace the old one and Jim went up on the ladder and replaced it today. This will be much better.

April 13, 2018: New Bathroom Sink

Friday. Had morning coffee with Paul and a light rain started in Dallas today.

Paul and Dominica went to Home Depot this morning to swap out the counter top for the bathroom vanity because the last one was cracked on receipt. So they are getting a new one.

This afternoon the new sink was installed.

It looks great. The new bathroom is really coming along. I am still trying to convince Dominica that the old bathtub has to go, it is just so old and ugly and does not go at all with the style of the new bathroom. So much money and effort going into that bathroom, seems crazy to me to leave one old piece there to not make it complete.

Dominica made veggie beef stroganoff for dinner tonight.

After dinner, Luciana requested a daddy / daughter movie night. She wants to watch the new Netflix show Lost in Space based on the old television show. It was kind of okay. Overall, I was not too thrilled. I don’t mind watching it, but I don’t feel compelled to keep watching it, either.

April 12, 2018: Grilled Salmon

Thursday. Another busy work day. This week is a tough one. Our email outage with Office 365 leading to our panic migration to Zimbra worked out just fine, but caused a lot of work this week that we had not counted on. So my day was pretty much all tied up dealing with that kind of stuff.

This evening, Luciana accidentally cut into a lemon and did not want it. She brought it to me to use to make cocktails since otherwise it would go to waste. When life gives you lemons, make cocktails.

Paul made grilled salmon for dinner tonight. Delicious.

April 11, 2018: Zimbra, New Toilet, and Father Ted

Wednesday. I was up early, grabbed my morning coffee and got ready for my regular, weekly customer engineering meeting.

I spent a lot of the morning working on Zimbra. We did a major migration from Office 365 to Zimbra and it takes a bit of work. Also had a big discussion this morning about how slow PowerShell is.

This afternoon Paul installed the new toilet in our guest bathroom that has been being worked on.

Tonight we watching some Father Ted, Paul has never seen it before. But he grew up Catholic, so can really appreciate the humour.

April 10, 2018: Taking Down the Atrium Tree

Tuesday. It’s a busy week. I got up, had some breakfast and put on the morning coffee. I was working in my office (Liesl’s original room, towards the front) when I heard a chainsaw fire up outside.

Jim came over today with his long reach chainsaw, climbed up on the roof, and dropped the problematic tree that we have in the atrium. We love that tree, it looks great and throws wonderful dappled light into the atrium and through the bar windows. But its roots are deep under the foundation and it just can’t stay without causing serious foundation damage. It had to go. I’m probably the saddest about it. I really hope that we can come up with a good alternative soon.

That was the highlight of our day. After that, it was just a busy day of work for all of us.
