January 22, 2019: Short Week

Tuesday. Today is really my only normal work day for this entire week. Somehow I have managed to have conferences and meetings all week. So today is a lot of office time so that I am ready for traveling first thing in the morning tomorrow.

I ended up only having to run one interview today. And that interview went so well that we made her an offer on the spot and she accepted. So that makes the rest of my week a little easier, no more interviews to have to do.

This evening is league night for Paul. So I stayed home with the kids while Paul and Dominica went to the pool hall. Just a quiet night at home with the kids. We mostly watching Family Matters which is still Liesl’s favourite “currently being watched” sitcom.

January 21, 2019: The Grices Return to Houston

MLK Day, Monday. The Grices were still here this morning, but left to drive back down to Houston shortly after we all got up. They have a long drive, things to do, and they need to get rested up and ready for school tomorrow.

I worked all day, but it was a nice, light day. Our customers seem to be working at around half capacity or something. We had very little going on. It was nice.

This evening we got to check out a tapas place called Soho in Addison. Just for snacks to see how the place is. Got some goat cheese balls, pomme frite, fried ravioli. It was quite good.

Dinner was grilled cheese and tomato soup. Yum.

January 20, 2019: Dallas Zoo

Sunday. Woke up at seven thirty, but decided not to get out of bed. Got up closer to eight thirty. Discovered that it had dropped to twenty six degrees Fahrenheit or negative six Celsius by the time that I checked the temperature this morning! We are very lucky that our pipes did not freeze, that’s one of the lowest days that we have seen in ten years of living in Dallas. That’s extreme cold for us here. We are expected to be above freezing by late afternoon, but still an extremely cold day. Francesca is going to be very unhappy when she learns how cold it is going to be for everyone going to the Dallas Zoo today!

Paul was the only person awake before me today. He was outside in a coat huddled around the fire pit in the atrium trying to stay warm. All of the kids were still asleep which was pretty surprising. Even Francesca was still asleep! So I went in the office and made sure that SGL was finished for yesterday, checked my email, posted on MangoLassi, and got ready for the day.

We hung out talking to Francesca till eleven, discussing her potential Mexico travel plans for the fall. She is thinking about taking the teens to Cancun or Playa del Carmen rather than going on a cruise.

Everyone showered and were getting out of the door to head to the zoo at about noon. Paul stayed behind to enjoy the warmth, and quiet, of the empty house.

Traffic was good and we were down to the zoo in about half an hour. Very easy. Francesca was very impressed by Dallas traffic. We are so much better than Houston. We often complain about traffic here, but in reality we probably have the best traffic situation in all of Texas. We are better than many cities that are much smaller.

The zoo was not busy, but we were not alone. We had to pay full price for parking, even with the Houston Zoo “discount”. That was not surprising, but we had been hopeful. Ten dollars is not terrible, and it still made the trip cheaper than taking the train, but only barely. I think that they price it specifically to make it nearly impossible to not justify taking the train whenever possible.

It turns out that the 50% off membership doesn’t apply in the winter months, either. So the good news is that the tickets were only eight dollars, but the bad news is that the entire reason that the Grices came up to Dallas this weekend at all was to use their new zoo discount membership and found out that it doesn’t do anything. Not a single thing was discounted.

It turned out to be much warmer than we were anticipating. For the Houston crowd, that still meant being bundled up. But for the Millers that meant carrying coats and still being too warm.

The biggest problem today was that almost none of the animals were out. Either because it was cold and they would not come outside, which was the majority of them. Or some large exhibits that would have been visible, like the gorillas, were all off exhibit because they were having their vet appointments today. Or the chimpanzees which were out, all ran away to do something just as we walked up so we never saw them, either. We got to see extremely little.

Flamingos and other birds were out. We did the insect house. We saw some gibbons, mandrills, cheetas, but not a lot else. It was super limited. We had okay time, but there was just too much empty and not enough to do.

The kids were hungry, so Liesl and Luciana each got a slice of pizza, which was not cheap. And Garrett and Clara each got a soda, which was about the same price as the pizza!

It was not a long visit to the zoo. Everyone was frustrated with the lack of animals. And, of course, the monorail is closed, the only attraction that would have been interesting. That’s two trips to the zoo so far with that closed both times. I’ve heard from others that it is always closed.

The one highlight of the trip was the children’s zoo which was open and had goats outside that you could pet. None of the other animals were around, not even the “crawl through” mongoose exhibit! Some exhibits even had signs on them claiming to be open, but had the doors padlocked. We did not feel that the zoo was very honest about the state of the attractions, or the cost of admission, before going. Sure, we expected lots of animals to not be hanging around outside, that can’t be helped. But half of the zoo was simply shut down sometimes with notice, sometimes without.

Liesl is creeped out by goats so avoided them. But Luciana, Clara, and Garrett (and I) went in and hung out with the goats. We got to pet several of them. That was fun.

We left early, around four. There just wasn’t anything left to do and everyone was bored.

On the way home we stopped at In and Out again and got a burger for Clara. All of the other kids just wanted to eat stuff that was at the house. We picked up Paul and went out to get food at Velvet Taco. Neither Paul nor Francesca had ever tried it before.

Dominica and I split an “elote” (what they incorrectly call elote in Texas) and each got three tacos. I got two Nashville Hot Tofu and one falafel. Dominica got her paneer that she loves. Francesca tried the fish and chips, but it was pretty spicy for her. Paul and two different pork tacos.

Velvet Taco was a win again. So delicious. They even remembered us!

We came back to the house and just spent a quiet evening watching Will & Grace on Hulu. This is one show that Francesca always watched, I watched a lot of, and Dominica basically has never seen.

January 19, 2019: Dallas Fast Food Exploration

Saturday. This morning Paul discovered that the back windscreen on his Ford F-150 truck was shattered. It was not broken into, so very unlikely to have been done by a person. We have no idea what might have happened. Our best guess is that we got hail during the night or something like that.

This morning was bitterly cold and there was a crazy amount of wind that went on all day. So cold, and the noise of the wind just never stopped.

All of the adults were up by around eight. The kids did not sleep in much longer.

This morning we tested out Liesl’s new video game that she got for Christmas: Cluedo. The classic Clue boardgame made into an online video game. It worked really well and looks like it will be a really fun way to play Clue. Liesl, and all of us, will be able to easily play on our own, or online with people. Garrett has it too, but has not tried it yet. So likely they will play online with each other a bit. It makes it way easier for the kids to do the game as they don’t have to keep track of so many things.

It was cold today, so we decided that the zoo trip was going to be for tomorrow and today we would just hunker down in the house. Somehow, the day just flew by, it was as if the middle of the day never happened. Dominica and I spent most of the day just hanging out with Francesca.

In the afternoon, Dominica and Francesca went grocery and clothes shopping for a few hours. I got “called in” to work and had to do two hours of Sage support and updates. No big deal, but very time consuming. But glad that I was able to do it and did not have to bother any of the staff to handle it. Rodrigo had been doing other work early this morning, as well.

The four kids did a ton of making slimes together, under Luciana’s guidance. This went well for a while, but eventually they got out of control and I was finding bits of slime on the furniture and put a stop to the slime making. Then we discovered food dye all over the floors, Paul and I were quite unhappy at that point.

The kids played a bit of video games today, too. Garrett and Liesl both did some Clue. Luciana played some Slime Rancher with everyone watching. And a few other games, too. Clara played a bit of Minecraft on her tablet.

At some point, Clara declared that they were going to have a dance party in the new bathroom because it was like a club.

For a lot of the day, Liesl seemed to want to be apart from the other three. She hung out with me for a while in the living room while there were off playing. And for a long time when they were all in my room playing the other three were on the floor together and Liesl was just curled up in bed on her own watching videos on her iPhone.

For dinner tonight, Francesca and I made a fast food run to help her to explore Dallas area food options. She is not here very often and has never been down to Addison. The Grices wanted to try In and Out Burger and there is one quite close to us there, and another quite close in Plano that we often see. So she and I drove down to Addison where she was amazed to find that we had every restaurant that you could imagine all in one place, and very close. She had no idea that we had a Magic Time Machine, she goes to San Antonio to go to that!

We went to In and Out and got food for Clara and Paul. Then we went to Taco Bueno to get food for Francesca, Dominica, and me. Francesca has never been to Taco Bueno and got carried away ordering four to eight times as much food as she could possibly eat; she was determined to try everything. I got my usual bean burritos. Dominica got party tostatas that turned out to be far better than what she normally gets at Taco Bell. So this will be her new stop for that.

Then we went to Taco Bell for Liesl and Garrett. Luciana just had pasta at home while we were out getting all of this.

Then we came back home and the kids ate in my room while playing with Shopkins (even Garrett was okay playing with them) and Dominica, Francesca, and I watched The Golden Girls for a while. Paul spent the evening in his office playing video games on his own mostly.

Tried to get the kids and everyone to bed by eleven thirty. Lots to do tomorrow. The zoo is going to be so cold. I think that with so many people we are going to drive down rather than taking the train, even though the train goes straight there. Ten dollars to park will be cheaper than the cost of the train tickets assuming that it is Dominica, Francesca, me, Liesl, Luciana, Garrett, and Clara. Paul does not enjoy zoos so is definitely not going. But I think that everyone else is planning to go.

January 18, 2019: The Grices Visit Dallas

Friday. Today is going to be very busy. Paul has loads of work to do in the guest bathroom to get it ready before the Grices get here. Dominica is spending the day mostly cleaning and doing some work. I have a very busy work day with three interviews scheduled for me to run and two customer conference calls to run. And normal work. And then the Grices should arrive between nine and ten this evening.

It is very warm today. High fifties at the start of the day and high sixties by this evening. Got to have the windows open all day and the house never got cold. The inside temperature was sixty three when we woke up and was up to seventy by the time we went to bed! Tomorrow we get the cold front and we might see temperatures below freezing during the night.

My day was so busy that I didn’t get a chance to, or even remember, to eat all day. I barely managed to get coffee.

I started the day with Skype ringing to test it out. But I see Skype ring so seldom that I had no idea what was going on. Always a great way to wake up.

The first interview of the morning ended up being a “no show” at the last minute. So that made things a bit easy. But it was still very busy all day.

I had several hours of phone time today. It was a busy day for everyone.

Work did not wrap up until decently late. Then it was house cleaning time. The Grices left Houston around four thirty. Emily is not coming to Dallas. Instead she drove separately and is going to College Station to surprise Madeline at Texas A&M for the weekend. (She got there and managed to get a parking ticket in her first thirty minutes on campus!)

Paul wrapped up the guest bathroom right at the same time that I was finishing with my final interview of the day. The bathroom is finally done. It now has LED colour controlled lighting in the shower, which is awesome. And we discovered that one of the settings is effectively a black light so the shower looks a bit like a club with soap and scrubbies glowing like crazy.

Paul also did some patch work on our bedroom ceiling that was damaged several weeks ago when Ken had a beam fall through the ceiling.

We managed to do a bit of cleaning around the house. Not a tremendous amount, but a bit. The house is looking pretty good. It was not all that bad before, since we had done two major rounds of cleaning in the past ten days or so. I even managed to go through a little bit more stuff in the garage and clean up another shelf.

Everyone needed to shower this evening so the bathroom was in continuous use getting everyone ready for the Grices to arrive. Liesl and Luciana needed to shower a little earlier so had to use the “old shower” in Dominica and my bathroom. While Luciana showered I read her another couple of chapters of Squirrel Girl. It seems like we are flying through that book, but Libby (our e-reader from the library) actually says that we are now only one quarter through the book. Much longer than I had figured. She loves it, though.

The Grices didn’t manage to arrive until nearly ten. The kids were all very excited. We thought about doing a video game tonight, but we didn’t manage to get one started before everyone was just way too tired. The kids just played and ran around the house for the few hours that they had before bed time. The Grice kids, Garrett and Clara, had been up since six this morning so pretty tired. Liesl and Luciana had not gotten up until after eleven so they had all kinds of energy to spare.

Luciana does not want to start a new Nancy Drew game because they are already in the middle of one that the girls and I are playing together. So we talked about starting a Sherlock Holmes game, instead. I tried downloading the first one in that series, Sherlock Holmes the Mystery of the Mummy from 2002 (which is free to play from Steam for anyone interested) but discovered that it did not even begin to work on our Windows 10 system, so we did not get a chance to even check something out tonight. We will try something else out tomorrow.

We set up the air mattress in the living room, which required moving most of the furniture around to accommodate it. All four kids camped out in the living room. Francesca got the girls’ room.

By eleven thirty, all of the adults were off to sleep. The kids stayed awake until around one thirty or maybe two.

During the night it turned from very warm to very cold. We got some rain and the kids thing that they might have heard some hail as well. It is looking pretty poor for going to the Dallas Zoo tomorrow, which was the plan with the Grices coming up. They have to leave on Monday morning, so that means that we are going to be shooting for going to the zoo on Sunday.

Today was a very good work day. Busy, but lots of good wins and leads on work. We are very happy about all of that. We need to see some real growth and it really seems like things are starting to happen now. We have been needing this for a while.
