June 13, 2013: Dungeons & Dragons After Twenty Years

Got paged out this morning before I could leave for the office so ended up working from home till around ten on a conference call.  Then had to shower and get the girls ready to go to daycare.  Dominica was in the office today.

It was around eleven when I dropped off the girls.  Then I grabbed gas (and donuts) and got myself into the office.

The day wasn’t bad but I got stuck in the office unable to get home as early as I had hoped.  Dominica was not too happy about that as she really wanted me to get home and help to clean because she got stuck doing after hours work and was not available to help with the cleaning really as she needed to work all evening.

So I got home and we were both scrambling to get work done and clean the house as much as possible.  It was a frantic evening.  We were pretty glad when everyone was running late and didn’t get there until more like eight thirty and that they had decided to drive down from Denton rather than taking the train and having me drive them from the train station.  That would have taken even more time.  So we got some extra house cleaning time.

At eight thirty everyone arrive.  Rachel and Morgan whom we know well and Kyler, Jose and Jaiden.  At the last minute Rachel got Kyler, who as DM’d for her before, to agree to DM our group which is awesome because while I enjoy being a DM I am always stuck being the DM and have not had a chance to actually be a player for a full twenty years which is unbelievable.  So this is truly amazing for me.  I get to play rather than run the game.  So excited.

It took several hours to get our characters set up.  I always hate the first day of a new game – too many logistics, too little time to play.  Of the group Rachel and I are the experienced players.  Jaiden and Dominica just a little experience.  Morgan and Jose have none at all.  So it is a diverse group from a role playing sense.

We ordered in pizza and Dominica had set up a snack table.  I bar tended as well.  We got to make good use of the bar tonight.

Luciana went to bed within about thirty minute of everyone arriving.  Liesl stayed up until midnight.  She spent part of the night sitting with me but most of it on the couch hanging onto Morgan who appears to be her new best friend.  Liesl did really well tonight

We had a really great time.  The adventure was really good and we got in more than four hours of actual game play.  We ended up playing until after four in the morning!  We are all going to be hurting pretty badly tomorrow.  But it was worth it.  We are so excited to be playing again next week and Stefany should be joining us next week as well for a full eight people.

June 12, 2013: Pull Up Free

I had to be up and ready early as I was going into Dominica’s office this morning to have a quick meeting before heading into the office myself.  So I was up early and in there making for a busy but productive early morning.

Work was fine and mostly uneventful.  Dan, Doue and I did a quick lunch at Best Thai, curry fried rice with tofu for me, and then we got huge loads of frozen yogurt before returning to the office.

This evening we hung out at home and did some light cleaning to prepare for guests coming over tomorrow after work.

I forgot to mention on Sunday that out of the blue Liesl decided that she was not going to sleep in pull ups any longer.  We’d tried to get her to quit them quite some time ago but she felt that she wasn’t ready and we gave up.  But this week, out of nowhere, she just decided that she was older and wasn’t afraid of accidents (she’s basically had none in a year) any longer so she is now completely diaper/pull up free.  A very big landmark.

June 11, 2013: Starting to Get Rested

Today begins a couple day stretch of, hopefully, catching up on some much needed sleep.  I’ve been barely sleeping for the past week, it has been really rough.  I got a decent night’s sleep last night and then got up and went into the office.

This whole week is looking like it might not be all that busy.  Dan, Warnie and I hit Redneck for lunch.  This was Warnie’s first time there.

I came home and we just had a quiet evening at home.  Liesl got into some trouble, though, for not listening and so she did not get a chance to play her video games tonight.  Maybe tomorrow.

Got to bed at a good time.  Feeling good with all of this extra sleep.  Tomorrow will be a good day.

June 10, 2013: Hacked

The SGL site, along with all of the sites that I’ve had hosted on Rackspace, got hacked and we had some malicious stuff injected into the site.  So I did a migration and got the site off of Rackspace and it is now on my own server and much faster and far more secure now (and we have backups too!) so this should be much better.  My apologies to anyone having had issues getting to the site recently.  Everything should be working smoothly now.

Today was a relatively slow day.  Had a bit of crazy early morning work then took the girls up to daycare and got myself into the office for what turned into a very slow day overall.

I took this evening off and did pretty much nothing.

June 9, 2013: The New Arrested Development

Got actual sleep last night, almost make up sleep.  Eight hours probably.  For most people that is just barely a night of sleep but for me it is way more than I normally manage to get.  I was feeling pretty good today.

This morning we finished watching the old seasons of Arrested Development and by early afternoon were ready to start watching the new season that was commissioned by Netflix.

It took about four episodes of the new Arrested Development before we were able to get into it.  The new season has basically the entire cast of the original back which is really awesome but the format has been changed a bit and it took a lot for us to really get hooked again.  A lot of the feel of the original series is lost and it feels like a real disconnect.  The new series attempts to cover something like seven years of “gap” between the seasons and you feel really lost trying to keep up with how the story is being told.  Once we sat through it, though, we did find that it was really good and the story was coming together so we are really enjoying it now but it took a bit to get to that point.

We are excited for Arrested Development and Netflix as this is the first time that a major network show that was cancelled has managed to be resurrected by an online carrier.  This has a lot of potential to be a game changer in the television media space.
